Can Nigerians Be Proud In Their Tribe Without Hating Other Tribes? by MrMaestro: 5:46pm On Apr 02, 2017
I've seen more and more Nigerians saying that people should stop having pride for their tribe, because it promotes tribalism and we need to be Nigerian, not tribes. But where will this lead to if everyone can't even be proud of his tribe because of possible "tribalism"? Will we eventually lose all sense of our tribes pride, culture and history due to the amalgamation of Nigeria? To be clear, I'm not clamoring for any sort of secession for anyone. I am for true federalism however, but that is a separate topic.

I'd like to know why people think we as Yoruba, Igbo, hausa-fulani, Edo, etc. can't have pride for the history and culture of our forefathers and display that publicly, while also being supportive of other tribes on having pride in their tribe as well? Why can't I as a Yoruba be proud of a literary scholar like Wole Soyinka for winning a Nobel prize and bringing pride to Yorubas and Nigerians as a whole, while also being PROUD of Philip Emeagwali for being in the top 10 most intelligent physicists/computer scientists in the WORLD and for bringing pride to Africans, Nigerians, AND his fellow Igbo tribesmen? Can we as Nigerians ever get to this point?

If we don't, it's only holding us back. I'll give one example, previously the Lagos State government stated that one day out of the week would be spoken in strictly Yoruba, to prevent the deterioration of the language. People were up in arms and thought it promotes tribalism. But why? Why can't the south east strictly speak Igbo in schools, the south west strictly speak Yoruba in schools, etc. Because if things go as they are, our indegenous languages will be extinct by the time the next generation is born, and they might as well be called English. The older generation hardly read indegenous languages fluently, and the younger generation is becoming worse at speaking fluently. The next generation wouldn't be able to read OR speak it fluently. Why can't we completely do away with English, and make our own languages the official language of the region. We all mostly speak two or more languages anyway, why not make these languages strictly Nigerian languages?

But this probably won't happen simply because we think our people making our languages mandatory in schools is promoting tribalism. Why do Nigerians think this way, and how can we be proud in our tribe, while also being proud of other Nigerian tribes and allowing them to be proud in their tribe as well?

The only way to cure ethnic acrimony is to form countries along ethnic lines like it was done in Europe and Asia
