Opioids are a class of drugs that act on the nervous system to relieve pain. They are powerful pain-relieving drugs and they are used to treat severe or chronic pain.

Opioids, also referred to as narcotics, work by reducing the
sending of pain messages, thereby reducing feelings of
pain. These drugs are prescriptive drugs and they are used
only when absolutely necessary.

These drugs, although effective in relieving pain, are highly
addictive and extremely dangerous when abused.
Examples of opioids are morphine and heroin, which is
illegal.
