Getting admitted as a science student will be very competitive this year except the candidate has a good O'level result.

I have seen alot of students with 280-330. Most universities divide Jamb by 8 which means 320/8=40 points. However, most students do not have a strong o'level. Most of the candidates O'LEVEL points will fall into 30 with few having 30-40 points.

This means 40+30=70 points. You should also know most of these guys got less than 320 in jamb. Most are withing the range of 280-304 . So 304/8= 38 points. With total being 68.

What I'm trying to say is most of the science students results are of high score and at the same time this is a big hinderance for them to secure admission as most of them already have a weak waec result. The jamb only compliments their waec which is an advantage to boost their aggregate.

The big issue now is admission. Last year UI medicine and surgery was 71 points with around 170 students to be admitted.. Over 3,000 applicants applied to study at UI and a minimum of 350 applied to study medicine and surgery. Out of the 350, 100 won't meet the cutoff and the remaining students amount to 250.

Now 250 students made the cut or but only 170 are to be admitted. 100 as merit and 70 as cachement. Now the student best bet is to be among the top 100..

Cut off is 71 and a student has 73 while 60 students have 73.4-75 while the rest have 75-75. Now this is what no one likes.

Advice, calculate your aggregate and be sure you're meeting up with cut off or probably apply for change or course to a course where you can cross back to your preferred course

Thank You.

Bros over 11000 students applied to study meducine at UI for just say less than 200 slots. Adjust your statistics

O'level = 50points; Jamb Score = 50points.

So, for ur utme, divide it by 8. E.g suppose you scored 288, it'll be 288/8 =36. That means out of 50points accruable to utme, you've secured 36.

For O'level. This is how it goes:

A1=6points
B2=5points
B3=4points
C4=3points
C5=2points
C6=1points

So, let's say your result looks like this

Maths B2 (that's 5points)
English C4 (that's 3points)
Physics A1 (that's 6points)
Biology B3 (that's 4points)
Chemistry A1 (that's 6points)

Summing the points together, you have 5+3+6+4+6 =24 (out of possible 30)

It'll now be:

24/30*50 = 40. (It means for O'level, you've secured 40 out of possible 50).

Putting the two together, you have

40+36 =76.
So, your aggregate is 76.

You'll realise that though the grades and scores are impressive, a candidate who had this last year would not secure admission to UI, UNILAG or OAU medicine. And that's the import of my post. With huge scores this year, the cut-off may even be higher.

Hope you find this helpful.
Baba !!!! what u typed up there was total trash. This is totally different from what Jamb used last year. Please delete it, you are misleading people.

Grading depends on school. You can find this on UI website.

2016/2017 POST UTME SCORING SYSTEM

· WAEC/NECO: A1(6), B2(5), B3(4), C4(3), C5(2), C6(1).

For the five relevant subjects the scores are added together to get G.

Score = (G/30) x 50 = O’level points (50)

· JAMB/UTME: Jamb scores / 8 = Jamb points (50)

Add O’ level + Jamb points = Weighted Scores (100)

I have read with keen interest many of the wonderful results students have been celebrating in this year's UTME. Folks who have had to wrestle with the exam severally now bask in the euphoria of having had fantastic scores. No doubt, in some quarters, the new leadership of JAMB should be applauded. At least it gave everyone "a sense of belonging".

If you scored 260 or 270 and yet couldn't get your dream course or any admission at all, be consoled that at least you "passed". The Magnanimous Unilorin Ex-Vc has made life better. Unlike other years where you expect 290 and you check your result only to find 206 or 220. He must be at least be praised for letting everyone know they are "brilliant".

Be that as it may, there is a sad reality on ground- the available space. The admission process may be a little bit "stuffy" this year because of the plethora of big scores. Don't forget, WAEC of this year too seems to be loose. So, in the journey to the Nigerian University for 2017/2018 session, the film or if you like, drama has just begun!

Legs crossed...

grin Dear friend anyone with a 200 has done well. Just that things have changed. I see a lot of people are interested in Medicine and Surgery. There are a lot of good courses, what matters at the end of the day is how much you earn monthly. It is well. I wish you and your friends God's best including those that scored below 200.
