Join politics and you will forget you had a poor grade.
A certain politician from my State has a third class, but he has once been a commissioner, a minister and now a senator.

fergusen:
I've seen many reasons adduced by several individuals why grades do not matter or are less important in determining future successes. I do think the influence of grades has been understated.

No doubt, grades can be a poor way to determine someone's success or better still, measure an individual's self-worth.

Your success in life or otherwise may not be determined by how excellent your grades are. It probably isn't going to make you successful or unsuccessful.

However, grades are an instant image of you at any point in time. Grades are the foremost tools schools use to measure it's students abilities. This means it will give a huge initial judgement about you, which transcends beyond the academic environment.
If you think grades don't matter, ask that friend who missed that fully paid scholarship by graduating with a third class.
Grades matter if you desire to get that competitive job where employers look at CGPA.
As a fresh graduate, grades will matter until you get something more compelling to sell yourself.
If you desire career progression in the academics, bad grades will ground you.

It is a fact that majority of people with low grades are usually defaulters when it comes to self-discipline, hard work, diligence, and planning skill, to mention but a few. All of these failings might act in limiting the success of these individuals (with poor grades) after graduation.

Good grades give you a head start, and an added advantage going forward. The world is moving at a fast pace, too busy in most cases to give you an opportunity to disprove your poor grades. Therefore they go by the numbers (grades) in assessing you. You probably won't get a chance to prove your competence.

And yes, Not everyone will be an entrepreneur or succeed as one. Not everyone will have giraffe legs (know somebody that knows somebody in that establishment). Not everyone will/can work in the Nigerian civil service (where anything goes).

Haven stated that, here are 5 things that happen when you graduate with a low grade:

1. You close important doors: some doors when closed can never be opened again. How sad! Whatever opportunities, big or small, there are outside that door eludes you forever.
If you settled for less and got low grades due to laziness and nonchalant attitude towards book work, you effectively closed all doors requiring higher grades!
A graduate with a pass or a third class automatically rules him/herself out of certain job opportunities! I need not mention these jobs, you know them.

2. Fewer choices: this is similar to the above. You end up with less choice if you graduate with a poor CGPA. why? Windows are smaller than doors!
Less career advancement options, less job option, and less pay. You'll have to settle for less.

3. Vices will appeal to you: I mean no disrespect to those with poor grades. However, social vices such as gambling, drunkenness, and others I choose not to mention will appeal to you. Anything just to dampen the disappointment of wasted years. However, it all ends in more disappointment for those not willing to get it right the right way.

4. Battered esteem: poor grades will batter your esteem. You will always avoid public discussions that will warrant a mention or display of your grade status either by you or others. Can you comfortably put your pass degree qualification on a CV? Never!
Deflated ego, inferiority, and other similar words will describe your situation.
Only a few (mentally strong) will refuse to be downcast and laid-back by letting grades get in their way to achieving success. The greater majority wallows in regret for years.

5. Delays in career progression: if you graduate with a third class, you'll need a PGD to move forward. If it's a pass, you're probably stuck/grounded. In the academics, grades are prioritised, and it'll remain so for a long time.

It is, therefore important that you begin to answer questions such as where you desire to be in the next five years, what steps to take to get there and what doors you need to go through. The earlier these questions are answered, the more doors you'll have access to, and go through.

To make it big, you either have to be the best at what you are doing (non academic activity) or follow the conventional easier path - good grades.

Choose the doors to open and don't let life choose for you because it might be a far cry from that which you desired.

Grades do matter a lot.

To me I think There are different types of education:

1. Formal: The one we learn in school and get certificate for. Best referred to as Western Education in Nigeria.

2. Informal: The one we learn everyday of our life through the environment, peer groups or family members etc.

3. Non formal: The one we learn in any establishment by undergoing training. Better referred to master - apprentice relationship or from trade centers.

Despite getting a good grade from the University, I know my aim is to solve problems and not to start looking for employment/jobs. There are so many problems in this country, provide them and you will be fulfilled forever in life. To me Western Education is for personal consumption, it is to widen you scope of view, expose you to the world and it is never a means to an end in itself. Your success in life depends on your level of thinking and how fast you can bring up ideas that applies to real life situations.

So since l already know my route in life whether I have a good grade or not it can not and will never stop my dreams. Though I graduated with a very good grade in the university but I can only see it as an added advantage and not as my only means in life.

@OP I would say you have done an excellent job. Be ready however for some backlash as have already begun.
To extend your argument let me say that not just good grades but good grades with a sense of purpose. As you have rightly posited, good grades provide an instant resume of a person and indicate such sterling traits as character, diligence, discipline etc. However, the excitement of good grades quickly wear off if not put into use.
It is therefore imperative for intending students at the elementary level (undergrad) to aim for excellence. The rewards are immeasurable. Let's not also forget that we are entering a phase in Nigeria where mediocrity would not be permitted anymore. Consider the embarrassment people like Dino had to go through becos of poor grades and questions over his graduation claims. Take a look at appointments all over the country - minimum requirements are no longer considered. We do not need a prophet to know that Nigeria's next president would be a graduate. Furthermore it should also concern us that as a people we are quick to easily excuse our inadequacies by citing untenable examples like Zuckerberg and Gate. Gate has one of SATs highest score and like Zuckerberg is affiliated with Harvard. Let those peeps citing them get admitted to Harvard then we can listen to them.
Another trend has been to cite examples of people with poor grades who today are entrepreneurs doing OK. It's laughable becos such entrepreneurs don't hire poor grade students but the top grads to add value to their companies. However, this trend shows the growing need for a concerted approach to education in Nigeria. Students need to be educated in entrepreneurship and business management. They need to understand how to commercialise their ideas and profit from their academic prowess. Some of the fantastic start ups today in Silicon Valley are founded by academics. Some powerful blue chip companies have academics as their founders.
In summary students need to have precision in deploying their talents. Good grades should not be the ultimate but a bye product in a process.

The comments on this thread are not really encouraging. I think beyond the grades the extra value gotten from students doing the proper thing is what the op is trying to point out. If students get into uni to study and be serious at that then society's problems would have been reduced drastically. But when people know that strings can be pulled to give them undue advantage over better qualified candidates then such society is headed off a cliff. What makes a country thick is to what extent it is willing to go to ensure that it's weakest citizens have a level playing field to compete against every other citizen.

I was a lazy truant in school and I graduated with a 2:2. I know it has been an obstacle throughout my career and limited my opportunities. You have no chance of working in any prestigious multinational without a 2:1 at minimum. Don't let anyone deceive you. Grades matter.

It saddens me to see that some people still believe in this crap despite the horrid state of the Nigerian labor market. Graduating with good grades is all good and dandy but don't think it's the end of the world if you don't! The Nigerian labor market is such that 70% of fresh graduates would either be unemployed or underemployed within their first 5 years. In the same amount of time, a wise person would pursue skills and business ideas capable of fetching millions. Oh and let's not forget about networking, with good networking, your low grades could earn you a job at one of the top companies. A friend of mine graduated with third class and was really down about it to the point of contemplating suicide, he was unemployed for 2 years but luckily he found favor with his uncle who now heads a specific ministry in Lagos State's government. The guy now controls those that graduated with much better results...CPGA my a**!

I hope degree and grade bashers will not happen upon this thread by mistake...

Good post Op, so what's the way forward for them?
I knew beforehand this would be unpopular and controversial. However it's factual.
For those with low grades, they need to stop living in denial. Snap out of it. Don't continually wallow in regret.
Learn a new skill. Develop yourself all-round. Embrace Networking. Get relevant certifications. Then relaunch. Your new skills will sell you.
