Many may not know that the highest ranking military officer today in Nigeria is General Gabriel Abayomi. He's the chief of defence staff,a 4-star general,he has been too silent in my own estimation, unlike his predecessors(Alex Badeh,Oluseyi Petrin,Andrew Azazi,Paul Dike) It seems everything now revolves around Burutai, the chief of army staff,a 3-star general.who in theory is junior in rank to Gabriel Abayomi.

Which of the two positions(COAS &CDS) is more influential in practice?

Technically, the highest ranking officer in Nigeria is Buhari. Many Nigerians dont know this but the president of Nigeria or whoever hold the title of 'commander in chief of the armed forces' holds the rank of Field Marshal or 5 star general.

Buhari is a 5 star General while the Chief of defence staff is a 4 star General

don't be myopic and see everything from tribal point. Burutai is influential because of Bh nothing more. At the end of the day, burutai will still salute him.

The CDS is superior to the COAS, But the COAS is more powerful. A lot of people will dispute this, but it's the plain truth.

if you had listened to buhari's speech during the presidential inaguration, He said something about moving the military central command to borno state i.e the army and the airforce while CDS and the chief of naval staff will stay in abuja. Thats y we are hearing only buratai and sadiq because of the war going on. They still report to the CDS.

The Chief of Defense Staff is the highest after the President.

The CDS is in charge of the armed forces...not just the army. cool

CDS is officer without portfolio. He cant even give order to the service chiefs because they report the CnC. He is just a political figure.

It is not Olonishakin. The Chief of defence staff, a 4 star General, cannot outrank the C in C who is a 5 star General.

Administratively, the CDS oversee the activities of the COAS, CAS and CNS. But operationally, the CDS is "just there" while the COAS controls the ground troops and the entire Army.

However, CDS only take charge during "joint" operations, which is rare.

Also, though the CDS has Administrative supervision over the COAS, he CANNOT tell the COAS what to do at any given time. Only the C-in-C enjoy such power. All Service Chiefs brief the C-in-C irrespective of their title.

The COAS by virtue of the control he has, is more powerful and influential within the army than the CDS. The COAS is more dangerous too.

Hence, a C-in-C could make anybody CDS but the COAS is usually a TRUSTED general.
@OP The COAS na him be d koko

Of a truth the CDS has higher rank and administrative control over COAS, he is NOT really that powerful as he has no control of operational activities of the Army.

The COAS is more powerful and dangerous in any setting than CDS, he is even more influential.

The C-in-C don't joke with COAS.

Just like the Chancellor and vice Chancellor of a university. The Chancellor has no portfolio, just a figurative head while the vice Chancellor is the one that wields all the power. Cds could be equated to a figurative head, ensuring smooth synergy within the armed forces. The coas however, heads the army and it should be noted that the army and all its unit heads reports to him and not to the cds

I wish to correct you sir.

In a democratic dispensation, the Commander In Chief does not hold any rank. He is above any rank in the army, navy or airforce. He operates under the principle of subjugation of military command to civilian authority. Therefore he can appoint a Field Marshal or equivalent if the situation demands. For a view of how this works out in a well ordered society we can look at Britain or the USA during WWII.

Churchill appointed Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery, in 1944 to head the allied invasion of Europe but Roosevelt as senior partner appointed General Eisenhower as Five Star General and Supreme Commander of Allied Expeditionary Forces in Europe (the highest rank in the american armed forces.) so that he would retain overall command over the major partners.
Neither Churchill nor Roosevelt held military rank during their tenure as Prime Minister and President.

I mention this using foreign examples because many countries in Africa and elsewhere do things more haphazardly.
