Nigeria's former President Olusegun Obasanjo has suggested that his successor, Umaru Yar'Adua, should resign if he is too ill for office.

He said there was "a path of honour and morality" for an office-holder unable to deliver because of his health.

Mr Yar'Adua, handpicked by Mr Obasanjo to run for president in 2007, is in a Saudi hospital for a heart condition.

It is Mr Obasanjo's first statement on the president's two-month absence which has prompted fears of a power vacuum.

On Thursday, more than 1,000 gathered in Lagos on Thursday to protest against Mr Yar'Adua's prolonged absence.

Some carried placards saying: "Enough of the offshore president and a people's constitution now."

The protesters argue that when the president left the country to go to hospital he did not hand executive powers to his deputy, as required by the constitution.

You should not expect Buhari to resign. The northerners will not accept and if eventually he does resign, they will use another way to collect power back. Instead of fighting for our tribesmen to rule the country, why cant we live apart and rule ourselves? Let the three majority ethnic groups live apart. They are big enough to form large and successful countries.

Most of our past leaders can't say anything negative regarding to Buhari's health simply because they are all fantastically corrupt. If they should utter any word suggesting Buhari's resignation, effc won't hesitate to open their closed files. Hence they remain mute and loyal toward Buhari's goverment while enjoying their loots in peace. Bunch of Cowards. It's a shame

He can say same for Buhari but don't forget he would be seen as trying to fustrate the north further giving that his support for Jonathan was to the North's detriment.
