A gorilla at the Philadelphia Zoo has given birth to a healthy baby after a difficult labor that required medical techniques typically used for delivering humans. A keeper noticed 17-year-old Kira had gone into labor on Thursday. Gorilla labor is typically very quick, but by Friday, it had not progressed and she seemed unwell. Concerned about the health of Kira and her baby, the zoo brought in a team comprised of both veterinarians and doctors more accustomed to treating humans with incredible results. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4578520/Gorilla-gives-birth-help-doctors-treat-people.html 16 Likes 8 Shares

Kira, a 17-year-old gorilla, went into labor on Thursday but by Friday her baby had still not come. Gorilla births are usually quick, so Philadelphia Zoo brought in a team of experts. The experts included not just veterinarians, but also human ob-gyn doctors and other specialists. The baby (pictured) was delivered safe and sound. There have been several successful cesarean section deliveries for gorillas over the past few years, but assisted vaginal delivery isn't common, according to the zoo. The baby was born on Friday, a day after Kira went into labor, and was checked on and cared for a day before being released to its mother. The baby a boy is seen here after being cleaned. A doctor is checking his heartbeat with a stethoscope. The boy has a step-sister, Amani. They share a father, 32-year-old Motuba. The child and his mom were reunited on Saturday and have been inseparable ever since. 25 Likes 4 Shares

xeexo: Sure, we're getting there soon. Ordinary animal o, and two Doctors will not be available to attend to humans giving birth in some countries. But some nurses can be so annoying, the way they treat women in labour. General/state hospitals most especially. I witnessed one, the lady was in labour but still in a ward before labour room, she was screaming in pains and some of the nursing there were seeing movies. One of them shouted the she should keep quiet, 'Se emi mo ran e ni se ni? Its sweet and you enjoyed it when you were doing it, so you should have prepared for the consequences ' A nurse said that, i was shocked that day. 272 Likes 14 Shares |

coolcharm: It won't happen in Nigeria because someone would've shot that gorilla, butcher it with the baby then come on nairaland to celebrate with a pot of gorilla pepper soup and there are lots of miserable people who would want to share the pepper soup with him. 60 Likes 1 Share |

Very glad mom and baby are doing well, but since mom was put under anesthesia during the birth and the birth was not "natural," does mom actually recognize that this is her baby? Animals are not like humans in that we can explain a c-section or assisted birth to a human mother, but we can't do that to an animal. I wonder if the fact of the mom being unconscious and unaware during the birth impeded the mother-baby bonding. Hopefully not. 11 Likes 1 Share |

SuperSuave:one funny thing with these oyinbos is that they care for animals more than they care about humans. They can afford to see a homeless individual on the street for years but wont wanna see a homeless animal. They can afford to let a person without health insurance die but can never afford to let an animal die. The only difference between here and over there is opportunities. There are more opportunities over there than in Nigeria. 5 Likes |
