According to ThisDay, Gowon, Shagari, and Shonekan have written a letter to the national assembly indicating that they want President Yar'Adua to write vacation letter so that Jonathan can become acting President with full executive priviledges. Details are still sketch.

Yar'Adua will have to do the right thing or face impeachment very soon.

A group of past Presidents, Vice Presidents, former Ministers and lawmakers have backed the Senate's stance on President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua that he should transmit a letter formally to the National Assembly notifying it of his medical vacation.


The group under the aegis Eminent Elders group was led by former President Shehu Shagari.


In a letter presented to the Senate President, the group noted that it is important to resolve the issue by inviting the President to formerly issue communique that  will enable the Vice  President act as President  in accordance with the constitution as soon as possible.


The number of Nigerians lending their voice to the issue of president Umaru Musa Yar'Adua has continued to increase as the day goes by, with the latest been the eminent elders group, a group made up of past presidents, vice presidents chief justices of Nigeria and former ministers.


The group which was led by former President Shehu Shagari had their first stop at the office of the vice president where they presented a letter of their resolution to him.


Next was the office of the Senate President, where the leader of the group noted that they will continue to act as advisers to the present leadership on the way forward in the governance of the nation.

Eminent Elders Group (EEG) chaired by former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon yesterday stormed the National Assembly demanding strict observance of Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution by ailing President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. The demand followed what the eminent Nigerians described as “critical review of the general political situation in the country.”

In a letter signed by General Gowon (retd) which was presented separately to the President of the Senate, David Mark and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Dimeji Bankole, by former President Alhaji Shehu Shagari on behalf of General Gowon, the EEG while endorsing the position of the Senate on the continued absence of President, equally insisted that he (Yar’Adua) should as soon as possible communicate with the National Assembly on his medical vacation.
