Nigerian Senate on Wednesday approved independent candidature for the country’s electoral process.

The approval on Wednesday was part of the ongoing amendment of the 1999 constitution.

Before now, only political parties could sponsor candidates for elections in the country.

The development means candidates can now vie for elective positions without joining a party.

The amendment had sought to move certain items to the concurrent legislative list to give more powers to the States.

During the electronic voting on the amendment of the constitution, 46 senators voted in support of the proposal, while 48 senators voted against and one abstained.

Good step in the right direction. Though with our political rascality and societal penchant for stomach infrastructure, it will be a loooonnnnng while before an independent wins a major election in nigeria

The Senate seems to have woken up.

Pres. Buhari and his cabal kept the Senate inactive with unecessary court cases all this while, they thought there were fighting Saraki et al, but we the ordinary Nigerians were the worst for it.

This is a good news o. It means its not a must to go and sit down at APC or PDP meetings before contesting an election.
Though I'm sure this politicians are heading somewhere with this.

Great one.All I want is an Independent candidate that is highly intelligent who is not afraid to step on the toes of the cabals unlike the liverless VP we currently have, and has no ties with any of these two failed parties, APC and PDP .
