@ ~Sauron~

I absolutely agree with Sauron. These were former Polytechnics. The better the ranking, the higher the fees, and the better the quality of education you receive from UK universities. Note, however, that top notch universities often offer partial or full scholarships to prospective students with a view to attracting the best students from around the world. You're still not aiming at top notch universities by looking at Plymouth and Birmingham City Universities. If I were you, I'll look at the Russell Group Universities (http://www.russellgroup.ac.uk/our-universities/), first. These are the top 20 research-led UK universities. See if you meet their entry requirements for your proposed course, and whether or not they offer some sorts of funding. IF you're lucky to get part funding, you may not spend more than you've budgeted for fees.

@ OP,

All the 4 univerrsities mentioned earlier have little or nothing between them, it would not matter which you go to.

My suggestion based on your cash contraints is maybe you should think outside the box and go to any of the IITs in India where it would be cheaper and the quality of the education would be better than the uni's you can afford in the UK.

Furthermore, the biggest and highest paying companies in the world (especially from Silicon Valley) head there in droves every year to hire. As bar MIT, Imperial, Caltech, Stanford and a few others, this is the place for the best IT minds and training on earth. Being a black foreigner that gained entry for such tough institutions to get into might even provide you with the novelty that would make the companies want to hire you.

Also, top recruiters know that any IIT graduate is quality (technically at least, not developed-personality-wise in most cases) so you get the geek-gloss instantly.

Another option is universities in China (especially Beijing, China University of Science and Technology, Tsinghua and Fudan) that offer courses in English (I know Tsinghua does). The quality of education is also very high, China is cheap and you might even benefit from learning Chinese so when they take over Africa, you can get into the action in the multi-billion dollar deals.

That is what I would do if I was the one.

Poster, thanks for this post, it seems that what you have posted and the exact course you are thinking of studying for your M.Sc. is the same thing i have in mind. I also have the issue of funds constraints but i really don't mind. I appreciate your post and great thanks to all the contributors here, you guys have really educated one.

If u don't mind studying in Scotland, then i'd recommend u check out Abertay University, It might not be the oldest university in scotland, but it has a very strong reputation in the teaching of IT, They run the kind of specialist courses u are interested in,

you are advising him to apply to IIT (one of the most competitive and rigorous universities in the world) in terms of admission. here is a quick stats

out of over 250,000 IIT applicant each year, only a mere 3,000 (abt 0.5%) get accepted. that is clearly a no go area, Tsingua is even worse.

their admission rate is about 0.2%.

Homie, are you saying you no vouch for the guys ability ni?  tongue grin

By the way, I guess those stats are for undergrads?

Anyway, most universities are getting a fever to attract international scholars and students to their institutions and help shoot them up global university rankings and increase their prestige. This potentially can work in his favour. As a foreigner that is choosing to come to India to study, they might just decide that is enough novelty to lower standards just a bit.
