Pandemonium ensued in the Niger State House of Assembly on Wednesday after hundreds of pensioners took over the Assembly complex , demanding the payment of their pensions and gratuities.

This came as the legislators , within three hours, passed into law the amended law establishing ‘A Contributory Pension Scheme for Employees in the Public Service of Niger State and for Other Related Matters Connected Therewith. ’

During the protest , the Public Relations Officer, New Pensioners Association, Chanchaga Local Government Area, Liman Chado, collapsed.

It took other pensioners and security men about two hours to revive Chado, who was thereafter rushed to a hospital for medical attention.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the PRO could have slumped from exhaustion.

The pensioners vowed to remain within the Assembly complex until their demands were met.

The House, after a three - hour debate at its 28th sitting, passed the amended bill which expunged the provision that exempted permanent secretaries and some key officers in the ministry from the contributory pension scheme.

The permanent secretaries and other officers in their category were also withdrawn from the first line charge in the payment of pensions.

According to the new law , civil servants who joined the service from 1992, are exempted from the CPS.

Speaker of the Assembly , Ahmed Marafa , who commended the speed at which the bill was passed, said the action “ has brought an end to the crisis associated with the payment of pension in this state . ”

Marafa , thereafter directed the clerk of the House to communicate the decision to the state governor for assent.

Why will a pensioner be protesting?

At that age he should be living at peace with everyone no matter the provocation.
He is lucky that he survived if not I wonder what he would have told his maker;

'That he went to a protest unfit and hungry then died in the process'?

The plight of many pensioners in Nigeria pathetic. This fight against corruption in Nigeria might be prolonged if we continue to treat our senior citizens with disdain. I am not in support of unlawful enrichment while in service but it takes high moral standards and fear of God not to indulge in corrupt practices in Nigeria considering the systematic neglect and abandonment of retirees from the public service.

It is a graphic error to base after-service expenditure on pension at all in Nigeria. Youth let us learn and try to avoid this mistakes our dads and mums made.

Eyaaaahhh! Poor pensioners. Funny enough, for most of them, the same pension was their motivation for joining public service. You'd hear things like "enter civil service so that you can collect pension". Like seriously?!

Its 6 years and counting my late mums gratuities have not been been paid till date by Taraba State government , the problem is they don't pay a dime and mist of the pensioners who were honorable and did not steal or do other negative things while is service now resort to begging to survive and some die due to inability to eat good food and pay medical bills. Yet there are cases where the money is either diverted or Governors don't see it as important and don't pay it.
