i really don't get youu, but my friend does not have a degree already . He couldn't start university earlier because his parents died, he has the resources now and wants to study medicine in university this year.

He has to first complete a bachelor's degree (4-5 years)

After completing a bachelor's, he has to complete medical school (4 years)

After medical school, he gets a provisional license and has to secure a medical internship (I used almost two years to secure internship). Mind you, if he doesn't secure internship within 2 years, he would have to take the medical exams again.

After medical school, he has to complete a residency (I used 5 years to complete mine. Some use 7 years).

Now, to your question, I will be honest with you. It is not really about the age but about the availability of jobs. I used almost 2 years to secure internship. That is to tell you that jobs are not readily available for doctors as it used to be. Let him forget about age and follow his dreams and hope for luck.

I doubt whether you're ready to achieve your set goal.Add seven or six years to your age you're still young.

wow so medicine is this hard?

Ok my friend is very smart, he wrote jamb this year and got 326 or so, o'level is all As an Bs and he has close people in university who would make sure he secures admission. He said if he doesn't study medicine he wouldn't go to university evercheesy. Somebody talked to him about his age, so he is really worried. He's an electrician and a blogger currently.

grin

Well about the age, he shouldn't let it bother him. He is only 25. I met a lot of middle aged people in medical school. Even if he wraps up everything at age 40, he can still practise and be happy. At least, he would still have roughly 25 years before the age of retirement (as a government employee). Like I said earlier, age is nothing. Availability of jobs is the real issue. He may even end up more successful than those that began to practise early in life.

And the good side is, if he converts his experience to an advantage, he would find his path to becoming a doctor very easy and enjoyable.

Stop this lies jhoor. At 25,its already very late to study medicine.

Funny how people limit themselves.

My sister left for medical school at 25. And she's 30 now in her 6th year,By next yr July, she'll be done.

Medicine career don't take age into consideration. You can even be 50yrs ,it doesn't matter once you have the qualifications, but your friend should be ready to write loads of professional exams.

Exactly

personally, I think many comments here ain't saying the entire truth... there are many factors to put into consideration before taking such life-changing decision.
first among them is "Why does he want to study medicine and surgery? ". The reason for this decision is the determinant factor not even his age.

If he is going into it because of money or easy of securing employment, then that will be a very wrong decision. If at 25 he is already a blogger and an electrician, and has amassed a lot of money to train himself in medical school, he can use the money into something else and see the result in the next half a decade. Also Remember that even the doctors in this country are running out for greener pasture. Further more, since he is already into blogging, he can diversify in the ICT sector .....cos that where the next bunch of money will be coming from in this era.

if it is because he wants to answer doc, men he needs real counselling.

if it is because he wants to save life, then he can continue in his current career ( if it is paying wella oo) path and in the next 10 years have enough to even open a hospital.

what exactly does he want out of life....

why does he want to be a doctor?? Answer to this question should be the bases of his decision not his age.

You may have a point but I dont think I agree with the need for counselling if his choice of medicine is because of the prestige. Life is short and if answering Doc is ones dream of fulfillment, then we cant judge.

i don't understand what you mean by specialize sir ?, so after you spent 7 or more yrs in the university , you will have to go back to study again?
yes that is if you want to become a specialist, like a cardiologist, general surgeon, etc, there are many fields of medicine and surgery. so each of those specialities requires further years of training usually between 5 and 9 years
