I think this govt is clueless. They want to leave everything for dangote to produce so he can become richer than the country.

These guys don't have economic teachers as they should go ND hire one asap to teach them about how an monopolistic economy will affect us.

I like the man for his business ideas and don't blame him but fed govt want to destroy this country.

Despite they haven't been able to fulfill campaign promises and job employment they now want to use a private business to fulfill it.
Now you are talking, we should be blaming Federal Government not Dangote, who merely saw an opportunity as a business man. Your comment is more reasonable.

I wonder why others are not investing on this scale. He is not the only billionaire in Nigeria.

Abi o. Good response. Does Dangote have two heads or did the other so called billionaire businessmen carry their heads go do trade by batter.

Investors won't just throw $18 Billion at you. What's your pedigree and at what scale have you operated before going to them to invest in your business. Remember that this $18 billion is not just Dangote' s money. You as a businessman will have a solid business case why they have to come on board to be part of a business of that scale. Can anyone point to any Nigerian businessman that can go to foreign investors to seek such funds for such an industry. Remember he does not have a track record in any oil & gas business but he has the pedigree for running successful businesses in diverse sectors. Which Nigerian businessman has that.

So, think before you criticize negatively.

I don't think these other businessmen have the same type of experience and preparations that Dangote has. Otedola, at this point, probably lacks that mentality and resources for a business of this scale and cost. An $18 Billion project is not something for a less than big player at the international level which Dangote already is, unlike the other businessmen you referred to.

I didn't compare him with any other businessman here in Nigeria. He way ahead of them. Ready to take risks and expand his organisation. He has actually been trying to get into the oil business since 2007 when he bought 2 refineries and months later a new government came in revoked the deal.

Dangote is an economic terrorist, thats just the plain thruth.

Let the FG give half of the support given to Dangote to other businesses, you will see the glaring change. I leave you with the summary of Wikileaks on Dangote.

1. (C) Summary. Alhaji Aliko Dangote (Dangote) is Nigeria’s most well known
businessperson and may be its wealthiest citizen. He has taken on
the aura of an economic folk hero for some, villain for others.
To supporters, he symbolizes that Nigeria can do more than barter and
trade. It can succeed in manufacturing. To detractors, he is
a predator using connections in a corrupt political economy to tilt
the playing field in his favor and sideline potential competition.
The truth resides somewhere between these caricatures.
Dangote is counted among President Obasanjo’s inner circle of business
advisors. It is no coincidence that many products on Nigeria’s import
ban lists are items in which Dangote has major interests.

¶2. (C) Summary Cont’d: Although an undiluted success in terms of wealth accumulation,
Dangote personifies the duality in Nigeria’s economy. This duality
presents a dilemma for US economic policy. On one hand, Dangote imports
significant amounts of US produce and equipment for his manufacturing
ventures. On the other, he has had success blocking trade and investment
that might compete with his enterprises. Weighing everything in
the balance, we believe the Dangote model is harmful to Nigerian and
American interests in the long run. Unfortunately, the Dangote model
will likely be the one most emulated until its beggar-thy-countrymen
contradictions become more apparent. End summary.

Still thesame old story, is Dangote the only top business man favoured by the Government? This is a welcome project, should we fold our hands and see that nothing is done simply for the fear of monopoly? Note that Dangote is not the only cement or sugar enterprise in Nigeria, and why should we import when we have the potential to produce?

Pls read how Obasanjo regime signed unserious concessions for Dangote for 7 years...that single act nearly extinguished all major competitors in the Cement sector.

No one can do that in a sane environment!!!!!

Obasanjo banned imports, seeing that Dangote group could manufacture locally. Lafrage is also here.

You point seem contradictory. How do you expect government to create jobs. Through govt jobs in public agencies, and at what value? Or improving operating conditions and encouraging private enterprises to create the jobs. In fact government appear to be fulfilling that aspect by supporting Dangote refinery. But the challenge is that we need multiple players on the scene.

Now, if a country need to be importing tooth-picks to satisfy local demands, that tell you our entrepreneurs are not meeting the expectations; or there are conditions that does not favour them. But we will all agree that an average Nigerian businessman will rather import a product rather than go through the tedious process of manufacturing in the face of local challenges. It is the area of local challenges and operating conditions that the government has failed woefully. We need to focus more on that.

The way this project is being heralded and anticipated by the present government gives one the feeling that the economic hope of africa's most populous nation hinges solely on this refinery. Nigerians wake up!!! Dangote refinery wont solve our myriad of problems!!!
A functional and efficient refinery of that magnetude would solve a myriad of Nigeria's economic woes.
Re: The Promise Of Dangote’s $12bn Refinery by bellyjean(m): 6:21pm On Aug 27, 2017
Why should anyone blame or accuse dangote of monopoly?

No other billionaire in Nigeria operates at his level. The level of his investment is massive. He is ready to take risks and expand his empire. But what do the likes of Otedola, Adenuga, Alakija, Ubah etc do? They are just ok with the little billions they earn from their assets or businesses. They are not ready to take on risks. Otedola is contented with the importation of refined products, Famfa Oil is ok with the proceeds from her OML who knows and her share of profits from Agbami fields.

Obviously, Nigeria's billionaires do not even deserve to be billionaires. They are not creative, they lack ideas and they are complacent. No wonder, they are always looked down on.

Any billionare can do what Dangote is doing if truly they have that business acumen and truly they want to be better.

The Federal Government has indicated that it relies heavily on the Dangote refinery to fulfil its promise to Nigerians.

When the hope of the FG and the entire 180 million Nigerians rest in the hands of a single individual, Dangote. All of us will soon become Dangote slaves since FG cant think beyond their dick that this is a monopoly!

Once he coughs in cement, sugar, flour, salt, pasta, beverages sector, all Nigerians coughs. They should just simply donate the country to Dangote as a gift.

So what do we do then, at least here is someone doing something that could have symbiotic benefits. Dangote would not live forever but the refinery would be on Nigerian soil for generations to come not in America, England, etc.

How much was a bag of cement before Dangote monopolized the cement sector? How much is it now?

How much was sugar before he monopolized the sugar market? How much is it now?

Wait till Dangote enjoys his monopoly on the electricity generation to Lagos, petrol to Nigeria and more. That's when Nigeria would start paying attention to something called 'Competition Law'.
how much was dollar when he built his cement and sugar plants. are people not buying it. is it compulsory to buy cement or sugar.

This is one monopoly that is pulling Nigeria out of cesspool, NNPC has been a monopoly for decades and still they can operate a decent refinary. Nigeria airways was a monopoly in the 70s, the result was bankruptcy. Nitel was a monopoly but could not have the foresight to reinvent itself into a major mobile telecommunications company. This Man (Dangote) should be lauded for his contribution to the Nigeria economy and not castigated. We all know in Nigeria anything left in the hands government to run will collapse. Where is our health service or tertiary education?

Whatever the case, the beauty of it is that Nigeria would be left with no options than to buy petroleum products drilled and refined in Nigeria. Even if Dangote decides to yank the prices up to his benefit, Nigeria would still be saving more than half of the forex it expends annually because petroleum product importation currently takes up more than 50-60% of Nigeria's forex. I'm sure you know what would happen to the value of the Naira if demand for forex drops by over 50%?... When the Naira appreciates that much, irrespective of whether Dangote choses to be a heartless glutton, it will still be a win-win situation for Nigeria and Nigerians when Naira value shoots back up to N150 to a dollar or even higher.
