Do you want to be highly respected? There are some attributes that can actually earn you respect. To earn respect means to draw deep admiration from people about your person, your qualities or your views. It is an approval, appreciation or esteem of the way you do things. We all see things differently and so just the way the eye beholds beauty, so do different people have different ideas of what it is that elicits their admiration. Generally however, there is a consensus of opinions as to what attributes can actually earn you respect. Here are some very important attributes that will earn you respect.

1.CALM DISPOSITION

A calm disposition can earn you respect any time. Calmness inspires confidence in people especially in troubled or difficult situations. A panicky disposition conveys the exact opposite. Your body can actually learn to send signals of calmness to your brain with practice. Note this: worrying and getting all panicky rarely gets you out of difficult situations. A calm mind reasons clearly and is more likely to find a solution quickly. Remember that a strong man can be described as one who can master his emotions. You will earn respect easily if you imbibe this attribute.

2.DO NOT BE A HYPOCRITE

Nobody expects you to be a saint (Saints are physically dead anyway!) Try not to impress people by saying things or professing certain principles you cannot live up to. If you cannot keep to a virtue or principle do not pretend that you do. People see through hypocrites easily and do not trust them. Do and be what you say. Honesty is an attribute that people admire and will earn you respect especially from your subordinates. Integrity in this generation is scarce commodity. Only very few have it. Be a man of your word.

3.TREAT OTHERS WITH RESPECT

Respect begets respect. It’s almost a cliché now. Most importantly respect is earned. If you speak to people politely or deal with them in a manner that shows you respect their feelings, they would in turn respect you. Do not look down on people or be condescending even to junior colleagues or younger ones. Age is not an excuse to show disrespect. Neither is familiarity or lack of it. The manner in which you approach even strangers could earn you respect. Do not laugh at people’s misfortune. Know that we were created equal and no one person has been able to show that he has a monopoly of life. At least not yet.

4.BE FAIR TO ALL

One attribute that can make others have little regard for you is lack of fairness, equity or justice. Everyone likes to be treated the way they see other people being treated. No one likes to be given less when more has been given to another. This applies most especially to leaders whether of organizations or communities. It is a well-known fact that the absence of justice breeds anarchy. This is because where there is no justice people feel cheated. Selfishness will do you no good. Fairness however is not always easy to practice. Not everyone will see you as being fair even if you are. The thing to do is to be fair anyway. It will be appreciated and will earn you respect.

5.EARN A DECENT LIVING

No one will take you serious if you if you are not able to fend for yourself and your dependents. Being dependent on another for your well-being will not earn you respect as an adult. Earning a living as tout, a love-vendor, a prostitute or a beggar will certainly not earn you respect either. In the world we live now white-collar jobs are thought to be more respectable as against the blue-collar jobs. While this may be so, take note that earning a decent living has very little to do with either color. It has a lot to do with being able to afford at least a little above the basic necessities of life and doing so in a dignified manner. This way your reputation is not affected and no one can lay a claim to footing your bills. Most importantly you will earn respect.

6.DRESS WELL

Looking good can never be overemphasized. How neatly or smartly dressed you are, attracts others to you. It is often said that the way you dress is the way you will be addressed. Depending on where you are or where you work, you must always make it a point of duty to always be neat and responsibly arrayed. Avoid dressing like a bum. For the women folk, exposures of sensitive parts of the anatomy will definitely not earn you respect. Tom Ford once said: dressing well is a form of good manners. The way you dress tells a lot about you and can earn you respect.

7. AVOID GOSSIP

Gossips have never been the favorites of most people. Back-biting is a key skill of Gossips. Speaking ill of people behind their backs and being afraid to do same to their face is bad taste. Do not be a gossip and avoid them if you want to earn respect
