Hilary smiled and clasped his hands together as he watched Rita powder her face. He considered himself the luckiest man on earth to have such a beautiful woman love him so dearly.

“How do I look?” she asked her eyes twinkling with laughter

“Fabulous my dear” Hilary said and leaned towards her

“I’ve got to run now, I’ll call you” she said and hurriedly planted a kiss on his nose.

Before he could say a word, she was already out of the door. “I love you” he mumbled and settled down on the bed in his one room apartment. He buttoned his shirt and brushed his hair, he had to see his friend Patrick who wasn’t feeling too well.

After dressing up he carefully locked the door to his apartment and headed for Patrick’s house which is a fifteen minute walk from where he lived. As he walked he couldn’t keep his mind off Rita, they met five months ago at a supermarket and he was attracted to her the moment he laid his eyes on her. Few weeks after, they began dating and for him every moment with her was even more exciting than the last. She was everything he wanted in a woman. Her voice, her laugh, her touch, everything about her had an effect on him. As he wandered in his thoughts he noticed that he was already at Patrick’s.

He knocked on his friend’s door and patiently waited for an answer; sooner than he expected the door opened to reveal his friends moderately furnished sitting room.

“Man Pato…” Hilary said in a loud voice and gave his friend a brief hug

“Mr. Hills, it’s good to see you man.” “What happened man?” Hillary asked assessing his friend with a weak frown

“Malaria wan wound your guy oh. But I have treated and I feel a lot better, I will be in the office by Monday”

“Please come back to work oh, that place is really boring without you, director is getting more paranoid these days. E be like say that her husband no dey service am well”

“Pay no mind to her; women are like that once they find themselves in power” Patrick said waving his hand dismissively

“It’s good to see you man, I’m sorry I should have checked on you earlier”

“Oh please don’t apologize. What do I offer you?” “Nothing please, what’s up with that cute girlfriend of yours Olivia?”

“Ah she’s fine she just left here some minutes before you came in.” Patrick said and there was a brief silence,

he didn’t want to talk about Rita Hillary’s girlfriend he heard she was getting married in a fortnight and he knew how fond of her he was. He could only imagine the feeling of hurt and betrayal Hillary would be feeling at that time. But at the same time it would be unfair to pretend as if he didn’t know.

The best thing to do was to sympathize with his friend and colleague.

“I’m really sorry about Rita. I can’t believe she would do such a thing to you. She seemed like a pretty nice lady”

“Rita? What about her?” Hillary asked innocently.

“I mean what she did to you. Olivia told me, I’m really sorry”

Patrick repeated “Rita and I are doing fine and we are happy, in fact she left my place just before I headed here.” Hillary said with laughter in his voice.

“How could Rita be so heartless? She didn’t tell you? Hills she’s getting married in two weeks.”
