“Patrick please stop pulling my legs, Rita just left my house and for goodness sake we didn’t even argue let alone break up. So how could she be getting married?”

“Hillary you are my friend and I can’t lie to you, I would never do anything deliberately to ruin your relationship. I am so sure Rita is getting married I even saw her picture on the invitation card. I think I kept the card somewhere.”

Patrick said and started searching for the invitation Olivia had brought over to his house some days ago

Hillary cupped his face in his hands.

Maybe it was just a case of mistaken identity.

Rita couldn’t be getting married to anyone except him. He promised to marry her as soon as his finances were stable and she swore to wait for him.

How then would she be getting married and worse without even letting him know? That would be too unfair. He dismissed the thought; it can’t be true.

Almost immediately Patrick appeared with a brown paper that looked a little fancy.

“Here, this is Rita’s wedding invitation” Patrick said and handed it to Hillary who reluctantly collected the card.

He opened it carefully and there was a small picture of Rita leaning on a man in the corner of the card.

He studied the picture the man wasn’t young or handsome, maybe it was money that pushed her into this.

But how could Rita pretend like this? Was she planning not to ever tell him? His heart began to pound.

How could he not have noticed any of this? He suddenly had a headache.

He opened his mouth to say something but he couldn’t find the words. After a long silence he said

“Women are indeed insatiable. What didn’t I do for Rita?

Guy, do you know there are times when I will go hungry so that I can give her whatever she asks for. God damn I am such a fool.”

“Please I need you to calm down” Patrick said hating to be the bearer of such bad news

“She told me she loves me, and she will wait for me no matter how long”

“Calm down. Maybe it wasn’t entirely her fault and she’s under some kind of pressure to get married”

“She should’ve at least told me something, at least a clue so I would know I am not the only one. How has she been pretending all this while for God’s sake?”

“I’m so sorry man. I really am” Patrick said patting his friend in the back and Hillary sighed.

Hillary walked back home alone.

Patrick had offered to walk him back but he declined, he wanted to be alone.

He’d never felt this kind of pain except for when he lost his father.

He wanted to call Rita but he didn’t know if he was ready to hear her voice now and he didn’t even know what words to say to her.

When he got to his house he collapsed on the bed and tried to focus on something else but he couldn’t think of anything else. He imagined how many times that man had kissed her and touched her and made love to her. His heart ached even more, she was his queen he even had fantasies of them together with their kids.

All of that was now thrown to the wind. He tried to sleep but couldn’t, he was wide eyed until dawn. Once it was 6:00am he sluggishly rose up from the bed and prepared for work.

He had a quick shower he tried to take a cup of tea but it tasted weird in his mouth, he dropped the cup on the table grabbed his coat and headed out.

He arrived at work exactly fifteen minutes before 8:00am and settled down to work.

He worked as an assistant to the accountant in a large consulting firm. He wasn’t really happy with working as an assistant but that was the only job he’d gotten after applying for six months and the pay was fair enough.

His head was pounding evidently from the lack of sleep last night. He turned on his laptop and tried to organize his boss’ activities for the week. He told himself it was time to stop Thinking about Rita.

“Good morning Hills” one of his colleagues greeted

“Morning” he replied casually and continued to stare at his computer.

“Staff general meeting is in two minutes, the executive director wants to meet with all of us” his colleague announced and Hillary nodded, his head was still aching he glanced at his watch on his wrist and gently shut his laptop.

He buttoned his coat and headed for the board room where all the staff of the organization began to trickle in. They all came in different small groups everyone seemed to be talking to someone. Patrick soon stood beside him

“Hey man, what’s up? Feeling better today right?”

“Yea” he didn’t want to talk. He wasn’t one to talk about his personal life with people.

Patrick was about to say something else when the director cleared her throat and Hillary was glad the meeting was about to begin.

The Director made along speech about how they all had to put in more effort and be diligent. Most of what she said made no sense to him and he wasn’t paying any attention then suddenly his phone rang.

Everyone turned and looked at him he looked down at the phone, it was Rita. He silenced the device and turned off the phone.

Then put his head down to avoid the eyes of his colleagues most especially the piercing eyes of the executive director. He’d only seen her from afar.

She was wealthy and beautiful and somehow he couldn’t resist the urge to look at her. For about ten seconds her eyes locked with his and then he looked down again. When the meeting drew to a close, the director asked to see him and he knew his day had just gotten worse...
