Hello Nairalanders, I am an old member of Nairaland and would love to draw your attention to what is happening in Rivers State concerning the ongoing extortion of School proprietors. Union members of National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) are currently under pressure to pay #500,000 to the state government ministry of Education.
Currently over 2,300 schools have settled this illegal fee while others are still at forfeit.

For members that are aware of this please tell your own side of this story to lend credence to it.

In a few posts I will explain from the genesis of this brouhaha.

When the current administration was ushered into power a meeting was quickly convened between National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) with the state government.

Generally the meeting was between the Governor (himself present) and a delegation of NAPPS. However the Governor was furious that all proprietors were not present. This was impossible as the Union members are in the thousands.

This explanation however did not stop the former minister of education from shutting down the said schools or the ones that interest him.

As a background to the matter, Private schools in Rivers state are the largest employer of organized labour. The Governor may be aware of this and also the revenue potentials of the sector.

A few months ago the state government brought out a list of illegal schools in Rivers state, the schools were all of better standards than government schools. This has sent many proprietors have been sent into panic by the action of the Governor and his body language has sent further jitters.

Currently the schools are under pressure to pay monies to the government to be spared by the Governors taskforce. We are aware of the Governors efforts to raise funds for 2019, however we are school operators and not money-spinners.

you are not a NAPPS member or close to a school owner that is why you can say this.

Are you aware of the state government extortion of schools? if you are not please ask those involved.

For residents of Port Harcourt please ask the nearest private school. We have already asked our members to remove their banners from their gates ....and buildings.
