Former chief security officer to former President Ibrahim Babangida, Major Abubakar Adamu Mohammed, yesterday in Kaduna said the Brigade of Guards Commander is not answerable to the Chief of Army Staff, but to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, adding that most of their information is given on the-need-to-know (confidential) basis.
According to Mohammed, the Brigade of Guards is responsible for the protection of the president and the Presidency as well as the presidential villa.

“These functions extend to the presidential wing of the Abuja airport”, he said.

Mohammed, who maintained that the Guards Commander could sometimes act independently in certain security situations without necessarily clearing with the president, justified the commander’s purported refusal to brief Acting President Jonathan on the president’s arrival.

Mohammed said there were always troops of the brigade at the presidential wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on a 24 hour basis. “So, it is wrong to say that troops were deployed to receive President Yarádua”, he added.

He said the channel of communication between the Guards Commander and the president is always through the ADC, Chief Security Officer or State House Chief of Protocol.

The former security chief who was reacting to calls for the sack of the Guards Brigade commander, the GOC of 3rd Armoured Division and the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Abdulrahman Dambazau criticised the callers for displaying ignorance about the workings of the military. He alleged that the call for Dambazau’s sack by some Christian elders had a religious undertone.

He pointed out that the Minister of Defence, Chief of Defence Staff and Inspector General of Police as well as Chiefs of Naval and Air staff including the Director General of SSS and heads of para military organisations like the FRSC, Prisons and Immigration services were all Christians.

“Yet, neither the Jama’til Nasril Islam or any Islamic body has called for their sack,” he added.

Retired Major Mohammed praised the military for dedicating itself to the sustenance of democracy, advising that it should keep to its constitutional role of defending the nation’s sovereignty. He advised the military top hierarchy not to be intimidated by any group or individual and they should be loyal to the nation.

If NORTHERN MUSLIMS leaders had asked Goodluck,Chief of defence staff,Senate president or any other Christian in hgh office to resign,most would read religious undertones to it.

So we need to be careful,all Nigerians cherish their religious beliefs ,guard it seriously & are extremely sensitive about it ^{tending towards hysteria/paranoia if you ask me}    !!

The hausas were busy joining Army as zombies; though some of them drink burukutu but they still remembered there is a quota in the military waiting for them, and all of them run to the army to fill their quota.

The Fed Xter thing is d cos of d lopsided intake in d military. We ve 7, states in d NE & 6states NW & North Central, as against 6states in d SW & SS, wit 5states in d SE. Also, undue favouritsm helps in d recruit/enlistment & retention of d hausa/fulanis in d service. D quota sytem only encourages poor quality people 2 get 2 where they r not supposed 2b.

From what the stupid Major has said, it appears the Guards Brigade can just wake up one morning and over throw the President whether Acting or Substantive. Are there no checks and balances in the military?
