He perhaps got his PhD at 24. You become an assistant professor by bagging a PhD in some countries especially the US. Some PhD holders from some other countries try to famz on that level too.

some post-1992 universities (which Sheffield Hallam is) in the UK use the title ‘Senior Lecturer’ for posts equivalent to what other universities called ‘Lecturer’, and use the term ‘Principal Lecturer’ for posts which other universities call ‘Senior Lectureships’. So it's obvious his position is the first level in the academic ladder.
