Man Akwa Ibom rushed this project haphazardly. All these contract disputes and fact the opened this project to up before it was actually done shows this to be case. The management at least meridian is treating to terminate contract because the state not paying them. The boundless ineptitude of these guys is astounding just reading these quotes.

When they say Governor Udom don't have the capacity to lead Akwa Ibom like Attah and Akpabio did this is the evidence! No money in circulation, no industrialization, nothing is simply working. Too bad.

Did you read the part that the hospital wasn't yet fully ready when Akpabio left office?
Tolexander:
Buhari's issue is even better.

Why not mentioning the Governor that built the world class hospital, Godswill Akpabio, who dumped the hospital for a foreign hospital for treatment, after sustaining injuries in a car crash in 2015?

Agreed its just sad nobody say anything til it's too late. I don't know about tstv but since they are private company they can be as stupid as they please. It's their money they're wasting.

Anyway we can blame this on state government exclusively. It's crazy nobody in State legislature cared to probe into this or question them about these issues. Our state representatives are lap dogs for these guys to waste money. How can health minister not know if the hospital is carrying out contractual obligations?

laudate
I agree. undecided What was the state legislature doing, when the contract was being awarded and executed? Why has the state legislature not probed the reasons for the closure of the hospital and brought the offenders to book? Too many questions begging for answers. Setting up the hospital was a commendable initiative. Now all hands need to be on deck to ensure that it works!! angry

funny thing is... that 294 million bill for 300 accident victims is not entirely off for such a hospital. that commisioner is just looking for power over the hospital and ranting... divide the bill up factoring in the numerous surgeries, investigations, specialist consultations and long admissions.

So what is your point?

It was hurriedly inaugurated in May 2015.
Godswill Akpabio had car accident in September, 2015.

What are you saying?

Erm

I do not think education is the answer especially theoretical as you seem to opine unless you are emphasizing skills acquisition.

However, I agree with the fact that we don't need super structures as this so called " world class " hospital. The problem with these so called projects is that they lack proper research as to their suitability to the Nigerian environment and also double as money siphoning avenues.

I beg to disagree with the portion highlighted in bold type. sad We definitely need a world-class hospital in Nigeria. undecided Do you know how many patients have to go abroad annually to seek expert medical care, simply because we don't have adequate facilities locally to treat their cases? Don't you see the numerous appeals from sick patients for financial help to go to India, Israel and other countries, for surgery and other forms of medical treatment? The basic problem with this Ibom Specialist Hospital has been the nonchalance of govt and the management. If this hospital were sited in a place like Lagos, it probably would have been managed better.

There are so many doctors that find it difficult to get a place, to carry out their internships. sad And we have many Nigerian medical consultants abroad, whose expertise is badly needed here, locally. This hospital could have been a great example of Public-Private-Partnership (PPP), if only it was well-managed. Private hospitals like Lagoon, St. Nicholas and Reddington in Lagos, that do not have half of the facilities in Ibom Specialist Hospital, are thriving and doing well. So why can't this hospital be made to work? shocked

True!! sad And the sad thing is that there are international bodies willing to invest in building local healthcare facilities, if a solid business case is presented to them. Here is one example of what a private Nigerian hospital has been able to achieve by emphasising medical excellence.

Lagos, Nigeria. January 7, 2016 – IFC, a member of the World Bank Group; together with IFHA-II Cooperatief, a private equity fund focused on investing in the healthcare sector in Sub-Saharan Africa; Swiss Re, the reinsurance company; and CIEL Healthcare Africa Limited, a pan-African healthcare company, today announced an investment of $66.8 million in Hygeia Nigeria Limited, Nigeria’s leading private healthcare company.

The new investment aims to improve healthcare infrastructure and increase access to quality healthcare services in Nigeria. In addition to providing capital, the partnership will increase and broaden the technical expertise at Hygeia and ensure global best practices through the involvement of Ciel Healthcare Africa. Ciel is working in association with Fortis, a leading integrated healthcare delivery service provider in India. Through this project, Hygeia will have the capacity to reach more than two million patients over the seven-year investment period.

Fola Laoye, Chairperson of the Board of Hygeia Nigeria Limited, said, “As Nigeria’s foremost and leading private integrated healthcare services provider, Hygeia is consistently seeking ways to improve and expand our offerings so that we can offer more Nigerians world class services at affordable rates and help to reverse the growing trend to travel abroad for care. IFC and IFHA, our long term partners, are working with us to achieve our aim of closing the gap of quality healthcare service delivery in Nigeria. We are excited to bring on board reputable new partners like Swiss Re and Ciel Healthcare Africa. We thank the Satya team for their support and commitment during a very important time of development for Hygeia.”

Hygeia, operates a network of two hospitals and three clinics under the Lagoon Hospitals brand and a health maintenance organization, Hygeia HMO. It is expanding its operations by upgrading and increasing capacity at existing hospitals, including its management information system, and creating a new tertiary care hospital. The investment will allow Hygeia to expand its service offering in healthcare services and the HMO to allow greater access to quality healthcare in Nigeria.

Eme Essien, IFC Country Manager for Nigeria said, “IFC is committed to financing integrated healthcare networks to help increase access to quality healthcare. More people will get better access to quality and cost effective healthcare in Nigeria.”

“IFHA-II believes that we have a strong consortium of partners in place to help realize growth at Hygeia. Nigeria is a key market for IFHA-II and through our investment in Hygeia we will be able to expand access to quality healthcare across the country.” said Max Coppoolse, the Managing Partner of IFHA-II. https://ifcextapps.ifc.org/ifcext/Pressroom/IFCPressRoom.nsf/0/C1481BDFE4A7586185257F33003E3183

What can I say? Very saddening, pathetic and unfortunate. After such a huge amount of money spent? If I were one of the victims of the sudden closure of the hospital after paying charges, that would've been a wonderful case for me to instigate a litigation against the government and the hospital citing damages that must be paid to the tune of N100million. Of course, I can win this stresslessly.

If you are a lawyer or know a lawyer, you could search out such victims and pursue their case pro-bono for splitting the damages to be awarded.

Nobody is talking about the real issue here.
This hospital was designed to offer premium healthcare at give away fees. It was never going to be sustainable especially with a private organization involved that needed to make profit.
The commissioner was complaining about the monies they demanded as pay. Was he really expecting them to accept anything close to the peanuts Nigerian doctors accept (after strikes and insults from the public) from govt?
