Jos: Army, Students In Bloody Clash

THE city of Jos,  Plateau State, was thrown into pandemonium on Friday again,  following a clash between  students of Plateau State Polytechnic and men of the Joint Task Force leading to the death of  one student, while six were injured.

Saturday Tribune learnt that the students of the polytechnics studying at the city campus in Jos,  at about 10.00 a.m. on Friday, apprehended  a man suspected to be in possession of an explosive within the vicinity of the institution.

The crowd of students milling around the suspect attracted the attention of men of the Joint Task Force within the vicinity who tried to find out what was happening and probably take over the situation to prevent hoodlums from taking over.

It was gathered that the students insisted that the suspect be searched on the spot while the men of the Task Force wanted the man to be taken somewhere as the students were becoming more agitated. Both the students and men of the Task Force later reached a compromise and the suspect along with the representatives of the students were taken to a secluded area for a thorough search in the presence of district head of Hwolshe.

An eye witness told Saturday Tribune that on searching the man, it was discovered that he was a mad man, based on the content of the bag with him. Items found in the bag were rotten bread, gari, coins, old five naira notes and other rubbish.

ST learnt that while the search was going on, other students trooped into the highway adjourning the campus, insisting that the man must be released to them. In the process many vehicles plying the road got their windscreens smashed.

While attempting to arrest the situation, the men of the Task Force released  volley of gun shots into the air and in the process hit some of the students who sustained various degrees of injuries.

Those who had gunshots were rushed to Plateau State Specialist Hospital for urgent treatment and one of them, whose name could not be identified as at the time of filling this report, gave up the ghost at the hospital.
