Officials have banned junior drag racing in Western Australia following the death of a girl, 8, who crashed into a concrete barrier. Anita Board suffered ‘severe injuries’ in the collision at the Perth Motorplex yesterday and died later at Princess Margaret Hospital.

She had been taking a test to acquire her junior dragster racing licence after qualifying for the exam when she turned eight last week. Mick Murray, who is Sport and Recreation Minister, has decided to immediately halt youth drag racing pending a police investigation. A statement said: ‘The suspension of this category of motorsport activity allows for a full investigation to be carried out into the nature of the accident. ‘The State Government will wait until the details of the accident are clear following the investigation before taking any further action.’

Anita’s family, which includes other drag racers, paid tribute to her on Facebook, with her father Ian Board posting a photo of her and her sister. He wrote: ‘Our angel setting (out) on what was meant to be a day to remember for all the right reasons. My heart in a million pieces atm’

He added in a post: ‘Not much to say but hug your little ones tight. Remind them that you love them.’ Australia’s acting Premier Roger Cook added the age limit may need to be reviewed following the accident. Current rules stipulate children can start competing from the age of eight and beginners can operate vehicles that go 40-50km/h.
