'Like You Own It' A Poem Against Dictatorship By Hillarie by Hillarie(m): 8:59pm On Nov 16, 2017
This poem satirizes African Leaders who see presidency for life as their birthright, the likes of Yahaya Jammeh of Gambia, Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe and Faure Gnassingbe of Togo and to every enemy of democracy. Enjoy!

LIKE YOU OWN IT
You came with misty eyes
Saying your journey had been tiring
And that you needed a little rest
We let you sit in our precious little chair
Now we hope till forever that you stand up
But You have your obese bottom
impaled on it,
Vulgarizing in it with all manner of trespasses
Like you own it

You told us it was just a sip
That you needed to quench your thirst
And now,
To get you to politely hand over our cup
Seems to have become a big ask
Seconds became minutes,
Minutes became hours
Hours birthed days and weeks which revamped into months, years and decades
But your ravenous lips still glue to our goblet
And your monstrous fist clench around it
Like you own it

We opened for you our treasure house
Little did we know
We accommodate a pincher
An inveterate drinkard
Whose abomination is being sober
A Power-drunk ogre bullying us with your toy soldiers
Like you own us

We watched, watched and watched
Hoping that sense would fall on you
Right from the era of 'let there be..'
Sadly, you prefer being an incorrigible mule
We have committed a grevious crime
By over-trusting a waspish wastrel
And investing hopes in a foppish lardass
Who sees the world as his family heirloom.
A crime that convicted us
To these years of sheer slavery
That have earned us bitter memories
Of extra-judicial killings,
Of ineffable hardship,
Of chronic corruption
We will not forget your name
We will not forget the shame
You whose foot have Imprinted on our land unforgettable crimes against humanity
