I still can't believe that the OP or whoever it is that made this list is talking about the history of Nigerian military coups without FIRST starting with the fons origo and mother of all coups. I am talking about Jan. 15, 1966. Or wasn't that a coup? Why begin with the Feb,13 putsch? Any reasons?

Ishilove, change this name
Lieutenant Mike Fyorshe
Thanks

EXECUTED IN JANUARY 1986
Lieutenant Colonel Aker Mike Iyorshe- Benue

He was one of the most brilliant military officers Nigeria ever produced.
So why was he executed? A set up? Conspiracy?

Major Daniel Bamidele – ONDO
The case of Bamidele is just pathetic. Bamidele knew of the 1983 coup to overthrow Shagari and reported to his GOC, General Muhammadu Buhari, he was promptly put in jail and was released after the coup, his GOC was made head of state.

Apparently, he got wind of the Vatsa plan and this time, he locked up.

http://www.waado.org/NigerDelta/Nigeria_Facts/MilitaryRule/Omoigui/VatsaConspiracy-1985.html

Sad, sad, sad cry
He was locked up for exposing a coup plot?

When it comes to coup de' tat, the northerners and yorubas are always very weak and coward. They organize coup without thinking well. Unlike we the igbos that went an extra mile of carving out a whole country out of another. Thats why till date, we remain fearless as far as politics in Nigeria is concerned.

fearless indeed! your four star general ran away like chicken in battle. where is KANU? after the noise the coward bolted like Hussain bolt.

Those days!

Please change the title to List of Failed Coup because those that successfully execute coup get rewarded and honored. In fact, we call them "Heroes"

Exactly.
Some former coup plotter is still ruling Nigeria now as a reformed democrat.

Many others like IBB and Abacha ended up with stupendous wealth living like kings.

Dimka, I think ppl love that man.

Is it that females don't go far in the military or they have never been involved in coup plotting?

@Raintaker According to some reports on B.S. Dimka that I have been priviledged to peruse,he was often described as a very convivial and charismatic officer. So,if you think people like the man, then the above ^^ could pass for a plausible explanation. As for your thoughts on females not being part of coup plots, let's just say maybe the male officers did not trust the women well enough to "hush-hush" and made the coup-plotting a strictly all-male affair and simply left the females out. No gender equality in this murky business. The fact that they "don't go far in the military" shouldn't be a tenable explanation afterall NCOs took part in most of these putchs, you know?

@Ishilove Regarding the case of Maj. Daniel Bamidele, let's look at this scenario: You get wind of a coup attempt that your GOC,unknown to you,has backed and given his full blessings to and in your patriotic nature, you waltz off to inform your GOC. What do you think would be the likely outcome of such a decision? Of course you are most likely going to get locked away. If the GOC hadn't promptly detained him,the info would have reached the presidency in Lagos and the success of coup would have been in serious jeopardy. Yet you ask why he was locked up?

you did not include the first coup executed in the country which was lead by Major C k Nzeogwu, Major Adewale Ademoyega and Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna. I think it deserves your mention because it formed the basis for all the other future military interventions in Nigeria

So this is a list of the losers in the struggles for power... the winners are never called "coup plotter", but instead "head of state", "chief of army staff", "governor", and so on. But for a mix of luck, planning, and support from outside, Nzeogwu, Ojukwu, Ademoyega, Murtala, OBJ, PMB, IBB, ABC, etc. would have ended up just like everyone else here: tied to a stake and dispatched with prejudice.

I was thinking of the bloodless and very peaceful military intervention in Zimbabwe. What if it had gone awry? The collective weariness of the good people of Zimbabwe of Mugabe's Methuselah-esque misrule worked in their favour, but it could have easily gone south, like it did for our Nigerian brethren during the era of military intervention.

If we are really following history or our history teachers really thought us this true story, It even a mistake for OBJ and PMB to come and rule us again. This country have not recover from the hatred generated from those coup de tal. We need leaders that have the will to set this country right with out sentiment and tribalism.

Lots of people from Plateau State (particularly from Langtang) joined the military in the 1950s and 1960s, so there were lots of soldiers from Plateau on both side of the coup.

In the 1980s, those soldiers who had by then gotten senior positions in the military government were known as the Langtang Mafia.

Gen. Murtala overthrew a plateau man (Gowon)... so it was definitely a revenge mission.

That "thing" blew down the wall of Ikoyi Cemetery. It also destroyed a Peugeot J5 bus and several of them flattened a building.

Several smaller things made a hole in the wall of my friend's office (right where she usually sat) and killed several people.

Another "rapidly speaking thing" wreaked havoc on Ribadu Road later in the evening.

In fact, it was like I was in the middle of a triangle of them (an Air Force officer joked that they were speaking to themselves).
Now I have a fair idea.
