Imo Police back planned phase-out of Automated Teller Machines

OWERRI—Imo State Police Command has described the plan to phase out Automated Teller Machines, ATM, in public places as “a most welcome development.”

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Aloysius Okorie, who stated this during an interview in his office, however, expressed delight that his Command had not recorded much crime related to ATM fraud.
He was of the opinion that the move had become necessary in view of the sordid activities of armed robbers, who trail customers from ATM points and dispossess them of their money.

The Imo police boss regretted the abuse and misuse of the internet technology and computer by fraudsters, adding that ATM ought to have been one facility that should have helped in making life and living easier. Some respondents, who spoke to Vanguard, expressed different views on the use of ATM cards and the associated crime prevalent in society today. One of the respondents, who simply identified herself as Chinenye, said that although she has an ATM card, she has never been a victim of ATM fraud.

A lady (names withheld), who works in Government House, Owerri, was not so lucky because the entire content of her family’s savings was criminally withdrawn from their account through ATM fraud.

“One thing we must all bear in mind is that ATM and internet fraud are real. There is also every need to ensure that they do not escalate in Imo State,” the female victim said.

wow. How backwards can this Ohakim government get? So should banks be shut down because of armed robbers? Instead of looking for solutions to improve ATM security they will just remove it.

blame the nigerians government but not the nigeria ppl that are f654cking up.
Ohakim isn't the one robbing ATM customers, he's the one trying to do something to stop it.

Do something about it by banning ATMs all together? Are you for real?
Next some retard will ban computers, because people used it for yahoo yahoo, and other bad things?
How about banning cars, because some reckless drivers have accidents with them every day grin
After that, you better ban airplanes too.

yes. because it was obviously doing more harm then good.
now are you going to focus on the real problem at hand: Robbery
and commend the imo state government for taking extreme means to curb it
or are you going to dwell on an unnessacay luxury: ATM machines
and pretend we were really loosing anything by getting rid of them cause i was in imo state in 2006 and there were no ATM machines. believe it or not, nobody died due to a lack of ATM Machines, so we'll be fine without them cause obviously it didn't work out.

So, robbers don't trail people from banks anymore but from ATMs only. Kai!! how much does the ATM actually dispense that attracts them?

Did we have appropriate security and law enforcement capabilities before deploying ATMs around the nation?

That, for me, is the real question.

ATM robberies could, should and probably were expected.

I have consistently maintained for over 4 or 5 years now that the participating banks and the payment gateway providers lack programmers with necessary skills to make the ATM business secure. Thus far, it seems they just deploy the ATMs with whatever default settings they come with.

Rather than get qualified and competent programmers to make these machines more secure they are removing them.

As someone asked earlier maybe one day they will ban the use of laptops or even GSM phones in a bid to reduce cyber crime.

And yet while innocent people get ripped off these providers and banks are never held accountable for the avoidable blunders.

As regards the issue of armed robbers monitoring card holders and robbing them after making withdrawals what stops the police from countering this type of crime when the issue is well defined already?

remove them
let the ppl take responsibility for their failings, stop blaming the government
they gave you ATMS and you didn't handle it right, why break their back trying to improve it when you're using it for criminal activities

how many times has the computer been improved in the last few years? ppl are still using it for crime.

hell, why not? lol!
You give these nigerians anything and they're using it for theft and fraud.
my dad wanted to open an internet cafe and the government was on his neck every second of the day cause of fraudsters so he didn't do it.

we have to be real about who we are. i dont think online 419 is as bad as armed robbery and murder though.
