15-year-old Nigerian Boy Stabbed To Death In Dublin by Nobody: 4:59pm On Apr 03, 2010

A 15-year-old boy has been stabbed to death in County Dublin.

The teenager was found lying on the street at Mount Eustace in Tyrelstown at about 2000 BST on Friday.

He was pronounced dead in hospital a short time later. Two men in their 20s and 30s have been arrested.

The victim has been named locally as Toyosi Shittabey, one of six children who moved from Nigeria to the Irish Republic with his family 11 years ago.

Irish police said an official from its Racial and Intercultural Office was working in the area amid concerns about tensions.

firstly i wish the family the best during this hard time.

i live and work around the place, i drive the local bus, i blame some of the parenting of this kids,
i have four kids two boys two girls, i will never let my children any where near where they are no 100% safe, until they are well able to
take care of themselves, i will rather not let them socialise than be in harms way.

this kids i see them every day through my work they are rude to their own, because they are with their pairs,
you will see black girls following Irish boys and black boys the same, where are their parents, 99% of the time
this relationship will never work.

please if you love your children keep an active interest on what they do.

How can parents monitor their children around the clock - when normally they both have to work long hours just to survive in the west?

We shouldn't automatically blame the parents.

Yes they are responsible for instilling good values but peer pressure is also influencing their children especially when they enter secondary school.

The social environment also comes into the equation and if parents decide to take up residence in an undesirable environment, then the upbringing of their children becomes a lot more difficult.

The amount of stabbings in London is  particularly disturbing. We are talking about children as young as 12 and 13 carrying knives, and boys between 15 - 17 carrying automatic weapons.

Dublin is a one off.

But in London many Nigerian parents who live in the affected areas are scared for their kids.

London's own I really dont understand.

Its like all the media attention has actually fuelled it rather than reverse the trend.

20 Years ago it was all about 'Yardie Gangsters (Jamaicans) and their Killings"

Today its about 9/10/11 year old's killing kids and also adults. Each day these Killers seem to be younger and younger. They are even r.a.p.i.n.g girls at that age!!

I think over the last 20 years London has become overpopulated and turned into more of a 'Ghetto'. This may be part of the problem.

you are right sun of god in what you just said,

but my take on this i any parent that let all that take priority over their children, IE money,
they are bad parent not only that you are endangering your children by letting stupid money
come first

i will never let my kids anywhere near where they are not 100% safe, am not scared to make
decisions that will keep my children safe. that does not mean they will be absolutely safe, but they
will have high probability of being safe

I agree with you on this. Many Nigerian parents take on extra jobs not because they need the extra money for necessities but for items that will permit them to 'feel among' their friends and peers. In doing so, leave their children at the mercies of the streets. A growing and worrying trend is the number of Nigerian women who are divorcing their husbands for very frivolous reasons. Anyone who believes that he/she can raise children alone is a fool. You may do well for a while but as soon as kids become teenagers, you need the help of your partner particularly if you have boys. This week, a Nigerian girl was among those charged for the murder of a 15 year old school boy at Victoria station in London.

Not necessarily.

I know families that support their extended families back in Naija while trying to sustain their own families in the UK or USA.

But it is true that for show off purposes many Nigerians go into debt and thus need multiple jobs to service these liabiliies.

leave their children at the mercies of the streets.

Not sure I can agree with this, I for one do not live in London ( thank God ) but I know many Nigerian parents who watch over their children like hawks and at times of employment they get nannies or relatives to help with child care.

The problem just as you rightly mentioned starts when they are teenagers, they go to school, visit friends, leisure centres and sometimes go on  trips.

It is during these times that parents pray to God to protect their children.

I for one will never let my children out until I know exactly where they are going to with names and contact numbers. Sleeping over at a friends house is also banned, because that is a fertile situation for corruption.

Nigerian women who are divorcing their husbands

Where ?

Are you sure it is not the men who are messing up , prompting the women to leave in some cases ?

@sun of God, you're absolutely correct, i think the media is playing a very big role in the escalation of all this stabbings, cos any day you pick up evening standard you must see one stabbing or the other, and 97% are ethnic minorities.

There is no need to dissectmy post because it does not have to apply in all cases or scenarios for it to be true. As long as it applies to a number of Nigerians, then it holds true. You can not compare Nigerians who are able to employ nannies to Nigerians who live in council housing.

My comment about Nigerian women divorcing husbands does not apply to good Nigerian women; it applies to Nigerian women who divorce their husbands for frivolous reasons like I stated in my post.

Without meaning to sound too controversial I'll pose some questions:  shocked

1) Could the number of kids Nigerians and other ethnic minority families have be a factor in how the children turn out? Yes/No

2) Does having a large family make it more difficult to raise children and care for them properly? Yes/No

3) Does discrimination in the workplace mean Nigerian/Ethnic minority families have to work longer and harder shifts which in turn means they have less time to commit to their children?  Yes/No

4) Does the environment children are raised in have an effect in how they turn out? Yes/No

5) Is what children see on the TV and hear in the playground a more powerful influence on them than what their parents teach them. Yes/No

6) Have western governments through policies and laws contributed to the problem by making it a crime to discipline children?  Yes/No
