Are you thinking at all

What we need is to step up security and resolve the underlying issues while keeping the Mercenaries of Chad and Niger out.

That will not solve the problem, it will rather compound it.

Fine, it appears the muslim over there are of the violent type, isolate them and make an example of them of how not  to be aggressive and muderous.

You do not solve a problem, by creating another.

'Military will leave Jos soon'
From Isa Abdulsalami, Jos

THE military authorities yesterday expressed their readiness to stay no longer than necessary in the operation of aiding civil authority in Plateau State.

The Director of Operations at the Defence Headquarters, Abuja, Air Vice Marshal Moses Akinola Akinsami, spoke yesterday when he led a team of senior military officers to the Special Task Force (STF) Headquarters in Jos. He urged the people to cooperate with members of the task force to achieve the desired results.

Akinsami declared that as soon as the peace situation improved in the state, the military would be off the streets of Jos to face their professional duties to enable the police take over their traditional responsibility of maintaining law and order.

Welcoming the team, the Commander of the Joint Task Force and General Officer Commanding (GOC), Maj-Gen. Saleh Maina, said that after the breakdown of law and order on January 7, the army, navy and air force were drafted to the streets of Jos following the approval of the Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.

Maina said the members of the task force were facing a lot of challenges, adding that by the time Akinsami had gone round, he would appreciate the challenges very well.

On Tuesday evening, Maina told journalists to uphold the ethics of their profession by balancing their reports and reporting objectively, adding that since every profession has ethics and code of conduct, they should not throw theirs to the winds.

The GOC said the military was going through a difficult period, and deserved encouragement, not condemnation. He pointed out that soldiers in the internal security operations should not be provoked unnecessarily, saying that they too were human beings who should be appreciated for sacrificing their lives to keep the state together.

Maina said that in spite of all provocations, the soldiers had been warned to maintain restraint as they are dealing with civilians. He thanked the state government, the people of Plateau and the journalists for their support.

Meanwhile, the National President of the Igbo Democratic Forum (IDF), Chief Chidi Ndu, has called for the disarmament of all warring factions as the only means to the final achievement of lasting peace in Plateau State.

Ndu asserted that everywhere in the world, both in conflict and post-conflict societies, the enforcement of peace is followed by quick disarmament before any rehabilitation and reconciliation programme.

He spoke yesterday in a statement he issued and distributed to journalists in Jos.

According to the statement, "The Jos crisis has shown , since 2001, an increased use of sophisticated weaponry. One conflict after another, the increase in casualty rate reflects the deployment of heavy cache of weaponry and an advancement in use. All this gives visible expression to the claims by victims, of the engagement of service and security personnel as ethno-religious militants.

"The question, however, that begs for answers is how the build-up of armoury is done under the eagle eye of the numerous security and intelligence agencies we have in the country. While it is no doubt true that our porous borders, multiple urban slums and astronomical growing rate of youth unemployment besides our compromised security operation contribute to the growing builds-up of illegal arms, to us the Jos arms build-up is just a case of the lack of a purposeful and strategic action plan to police the environment since the September 7, 2001crisis."

It pointed out that "we, as stakeholders in the search for an enduring peace on the Plateau, call for a quick disarmament programme in areas of the city noted during the carnage for the use of fire arms. The pointers to this environment are there and the security agencies cannot feign ignorance and compromise national security under the guise of maintaining a guided neutrality. The disarmament must therefore begin.

"Everywhere in the world, in conflict and post-conflict societies, the enforcement of peace, is followed by quick disarmament, before any rehabilitation and reconciliation programme. Reconciliation cannot be achieved when the 'carrot and the stick' posture is maintained by parties in conflict. A man with a gun will only be waiting for the right time to use it and when not disarmed patience is quickly exhaustible."
