President Muhammadu Buhari has met with the leadership of the National Assembly led by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki at the Aso Rock Villa.

Mr. Saraki who spoke briefly at the end of the meeting said they were at the villa to brief the president on the decisions and resolutions of the Senate regarding the Benue crisis.

The Senate had during plenary on Tuesday given the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, 14 days to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators of violence in Benue State. Over 70 people have been killed in Benue in 2018 in attacks by suspected herdsmen.

A Senate committee report said ‘faceless people’ were sponsoring and harbouring foreign mercenaries who have been perpetrating killings in Benue and other parts of Nigeria.

Mr. Saraki on Tuesday told reporters at the Villa that they successfully briefed the president, who received them well.

On his part, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly matters, Ita Enang, commended the Senate for its “robust debate on the crisis devoid of sentiments.”

The Senate’s interim report by the ad-hoc committee on the review of the current security infrastructure in Nigeria noted that the situation in Benue is a manifestation of the larger security crisis in Nigeria.

The chairman of the committee, Ahmed Lawan, who led the committee on a visit to Benue State presented the report on Tuesday.

“It is very clear from our interaction that some faceless people are sponsoring and harbouring the well trained foreign mercenary elements and using them to unleash violence and criminality in Nigeria‘s rural space,” Mr. Lawan said.

I think Buhari is being vindictive and intolerant to any opposing view or position. The last straw is these killings by his kinsmen who brags about with their atrocious activities. Tell someone somewhere that Nigeria is yet to be a banana republic. Ndi asai

Catholic bishops on killings by herdsmen: ‘It’s easier to prevent than stop war’

Against the backdrop of incessant killings by herdsmen, the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, CBCN, has warned that Nigerians might resort to self-defence if the Federal Government continued to fail in its responsibility of protecting the citizenry against attacks by Fulani herdsmen.

It noted that Nigeria appeared “to be under siege from many forces, while innocent citizens in different communities throughout the nation are being attacked and their sources of livelihood mindlessly destroyed.”

The position of the bishops was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by its President and Archbishop of Jos, Ignatius Kaigama, and Secretary/Bishop of Gboko, William Avenya; which warned that “it is wiser and easier to prevent a war than to stop it after it has broken out”.

Ortom is a very smart politician!...and i'm surprised he's selling a dummy to benue people and they seem to have fallen for it! Okay, benue is the food basket of the nation, what has the ortom govt done to contribute to the lot of the farmers in benue? I mean we have seen what Audu ogbeh has been able to do with yam farmers from Abuja; Nigeria is now a net exporter of yams courtesy of collaboration between Federal Ministry of Agric and benue yam farmers. Ortom is obviously threatened by this fact because he has done very little to help the farmers' fortunes in the three years he has been in govt. All he could offer the farmers is "I will help you prevent herdsmen from your farmlands"!

Even with the massive farmlands in Benue, the question is how much IGR has Ortom eked out from farming business for the govt? The answer is virtually nothing; because we know benue govt under ortom is owing teachers, workers and there's no evidence of investment in healthcare, school or road infrastructure in the last three years; it's okada and keke napep everywhere even in markurdi o (the state capital).

Ortom is already looking at 2019, and he 's playing on the sensibilities of benue farmers by creating friction with farmers and herdsmen. He is not just interested in any option that could potentially resolve the herdsmen-farmers crises!...When cattle colony option is suggested, ortom would say "no o we don't have land for grazing o or i don't know the meaning of cattle colony o; we only have farmlands o! (as if he has done anything meaningful with the farm lands o)! Ranching is the only solution o!......okay, when he was told that Cattle colony is a "mega-ranch" more like a super-market for all the needs of the cattle, ortom changed vibes again o and said benue doesn't have lands for fulani herdsmen! For God's sake, we have idoma and tiv people in cattle business too! Of course, we understand his fears; it's all about 2019! The unfortunate benue killings has earned ortom huge public sympathy and he doesn't want any option that would possibly resolve the farmers-herdsmen conundrum and make him lose any strand of that sympathy before the next election. The benue killing has shielded ortom from the real issue that he's a failed governor!

Well, Ortom is deliberately making benue miss out in the lucrative cattle business for his own selfish gains! I can tell you for free that Lagos & southwest account for about 60% of the 6 to 7 million annual cattle consumption. Go to Agege abattoir and see an example of a functional cattle colony. Lagos generates close to N100 billion in taxes from cattle business; and Agege where the mega-ranch is located in Lagos is a high brow o going by Markurdi standard and it is predominantly inhabited by hausas and fulanis, yet we have never experienced any large-scale skirmish like the one seen in benue recently because Lagos has been blessed with responsible people in government over the years.

Whether ortom likes it or not, he will account for the killing in benue someday!....Don't trust politicians! They can do anything to have power!

Politicians are the ones instigating crises in benue!....Ortom is desperate for second term bid, yet he has failed in his first term mandate. There is no road infrastructure to showcase in his first three years; he's still owing workers'salaries despite all the bailout funds; benue does not have functional transport system, it's okada & keke napep everywhere you go; recent WAEC results have shown benue as one of the worst performing, ortom is owing teachers; the state is poor in IGR generation, thank God for federal allocation; benue under ortom has done little for farmers in the state!.....Thanks to Audu Ogbeh who has helped the fortunes of yam farmers in the state!

Other than the anti-grazing non-sense, ortom should come out and state his contributions to benue farmers. Ortom started getting jittery the moment Audu Ogbeh began promoting yam export in benue. Thus in order to be seen to be working for farmers in the state, the state govt had to create an artificial conflict using anti-grazing laws and make herdsmen the fall guy.

Knowing that election is approaching, ortom had to introduce some divisive anti-grazing law to instigate crises between farmers and herdsmen who have coexisted for years o pretending to be contributing to the lot of the farmers! Some people were later armed to unleash terror on innocent people in their farmlands, and the non-performing govt was quick to rush to say it was herdsmen thus putting the whole state in mourning mood just so that the state govt could attract public sympathy and to distract benue people from asking questions on ortom's performance in this first term.

To tell you that the benue attack was premeditated and that ortom is being economical with the truth, listen to VP Osinbajo vehemently disputing that his office was forewarned about the attack by the benue govt; and anyone that knows the VP will know that Ortom has misfired this time and his lies have been taken too far and he should be investigated. As it stands, only the benue govt knew the attack would happen.

Ortom knows the killers of benue people!...Ask him!

I kindly advice the governors not to give their lands for the establishment of cattle colonies, if not they might be a little charitable to hand the devil a green card into their lands.. I kick against that idea we have all seen what fulani herdsmen are capable of doing. Then is it right that we allow them into our lands??.. God4bid.. Instead the government should take them to sambisa which is wide enough for their grazing

Meeting about what?

Souls are wasted in hundreds and thousands in the hands of herdsmen it's now our sorry their dear president felt it is time to do meeting?

Anyway it's alright we have seen it all and nothing else to see. By 2019 we shall all see. Time to do meeting is damn too late people had crossed their heart.

I only felt so sorry for benue people because after delivering their state for apc and were paid back this way it's so painful and the most shocking things is none of the big wigs in apc show any serious solidarity to Ortom or benue people only people from other party showed support and solidarity with benue people it's so shameful.

Sorry. The Gov and his people say no to cattle colony. Or must it be Benue? Why not approach other States? You are one of the terrorists from the desert. That is why you are not happy with Gov Ortom. It is clear you people have a hidden agenda. That is why you are so pained. You have been posting this stupid comment on all the threads concerning Benue. My message to you: Your evil agenda has been found out. Go and tell whoever that send you. Those people in Benue say no.

Its unfortunate that you have been brainwash beyond recovery. Your baseless proof of how Ortom is playing politics here has only confirm that you are not in torch with the realities in the state. Just upgrade your knowledge with the following facts: Makurdi is not predominantly inhabited by Fulanis and Hausas, The Fulani militia (and not Ortom) are the ones killing defenseless Farmers in Benue, There is no bases for comparing Benue IGR with that of Lagos, the Anti-open grazing law is the people's law, and not Ortom's law, Cattle rearing is a personal business and hence can not be set by land donations by states, rather government can only make enabling environment for such businesses to strive by providing ranches as is being done in civilized nations. Whether Ortom has done much or less for the state has no place in justifying Fulani genocide on the people of that state.
