UNILAG Becomes First University To Get TV Licence As Buhari Gives Approval by Opinionated: 12:12pm On Jan 19, 2018
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has recorded another first by becoming the first university and tertiary institution in Nigeria to get a TV broadcast licence.

Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe speaking on this yesterday in Abuja at a meeting with Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, and the Senior Special Assistant, Garba Shehu at the presidential villa in Abuja expressed the university’s gratitude to the president for giving the approval thus:

“It is now on record that the present administration signed the first campus TV license and we remain deeply grateful to the President.

“The university is a brand. We want the university to be the research hub in Africa, and we are working towards being among the best three in the entire continent,’’ he noted.

Also present at the meeting was the Head of UNILAG Mass Communication Department, Professor Ralph Akinfeleye who said:

“It is interesting that President Buhari signed the first TV station license for a university. We will use the TV station for pedagogical purity of education.”

UNILAG has established itself as a pioneer in broadcasting among Nigerian universities being the first institution to obtain a licence for a radio station in 2002.

UNILAG 103.1 fm is still active after commencing broadcast in 2004 with other universities following its lead to establish their own radio stations too.

We are definitely looking forward to see what the university has to offer with its new television station.
