The Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has confirmed the presence of adequate hydrocarbon in the Sokoto basin, urging governments of Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara and Katsina states to prepare to acquire oil blocks in the basin.
Speaking at the regional technology knowledge sharing workshop on hydrocarbon potentials of the Sokoto basin, NNPC Group Managing Director, Dr. Maikanti Baru said this would make them active players in the oil and gas industry.

The workshop holding at the ultra- modern auditorium of Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, was organized by the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) in collaboration with the Sokoto State Government and the university.
According to Baru, the objective of exploration in the inland basins was to attract oil and gas investments upon successful discovery.
Represented by the Kaduna zonal Manager, Aliyu Jafar, the NNPC GMD solicited the support of traditional institutions and host communities for the actualization of the lofty ideals.
In their separate remarks, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and his Kebbi state counterpart, Atiku Bagudu assured their support towards the actualization of oil discovery in the basin.
In his goodwill message, Sultan Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar urged the federal government to channel the revenue generated from oil exploration to the agricultural sector.
The guest speaker, Professor Muhammed Abubakar said oil exploration across the country would strengthen national unity.
The Vice Chancellor of UDUS, Professor Abdullahi Zuru, said the workshop was organized to attract attention to the Sokoto basin potentials.

how can the NNPC show such open unprofessionalism by annointing a preferred oil block owner ? Does the ND state own the ones in their backyard?

The bold part exposes their plan at owning their own oil well in addition the southern wells then adjusting the laws to put the bulk of profit in the oil well owners hands.
Southerners need to wake up in this country.

No oil major will commit it's resources to drill fuel in the north of Nigeria , NNPC must be ready to go it themselves because no IOC will be part of any useless JV in the north of Nigeria ...Buhari she used Nepotism to jump the Benue valley and move to the unviable north to find Gbese Oil

Imagine the effrontery!!! The Baru dofus is encouraging state govt to acquire oil blocks while the oil blocks of Niger-Deltans are shared to individuals as national cake. I don't even understand why the states are not allowed to manage their oil blocks and in turn, pay tax to the FG as is done in other sane countries.

I pray this comes to reality. Let there be enough Hydrocarbon in sokoto and let the government of the states maintain the oil blocs; this should trigger true federalism and not the nonsense we are practicing here.

Guy, that newspaper report is misleading. There is NO crude oil in that basin. There is only gas. Note that they said "hydrocarbons." Every geologist that has ever worked on that basin, knows quite well that there is no crude anywhere, inside there. Let them just keep deceiving themselves.

God bless you!! cheesy Let them continue lying to themselves. 5 years from now, they will still be on the same spot, with no drop of crude oil to show for it. Do you know how many wells have been drilled in the Lake Chad Basin area?

Past reports on Nigeria’s oil exploration in the frontier basins had indicated that between 1977 and 1996, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) commenced exploration activities in the Chad Basin during which 23 wells were drilled and only two wells – Wadi-1 and Kinasar-1, recorded non-commercial gas discoveries before exploration was suspended in the Chad Basin in 2000 for lack of commercial finds.

Similarly on the Gongola Basin, the federal government had between 1993 and 2000 awarded blocks in the basin to Chevron, Total and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo), and they reportedly acquired 3,153km of 2D seismic data, drilled one well each and made a non-commercial gas discovery in one of the wells – Kolmani River-1, before they suspended operations and abandoned the blocks.
Nevertheless, the government did not give up on the venture, and rather continued in 2010 when the NNPC this time reportedly acquired 3D Seismic data for processing and interpretation of oil exploration in the Chad Basin.

At that time, the former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, reportedly insisted on an aggressive oil exploration in the Chad Basin even though she acknowledged there were inherent challenges to the venture in the basin. She stated then at a meeting in Lagos that the fact that neighbouring countries such as Chad, and Niger, with similar topography, sharing the basin with Nigeria, could find and mine oil from there, meant that Nigeria could also explore the basin to augment her oil reserves.

“Though, it is too early to be categorical, there is a possibility that we may find oil in commercial quantity in the Chad Basin because of the discoveries of commercial hydrocarbon deposits in neighboring countries of Chad, Niger and Sudan which have similar structural settings with the Chad Basin. Therefore it is prudent to aggressively explore the Chad Basin for possible hydrocarbon deposits.

“Already the NNPC’s New Frontier Exploration Services Division which is leading the charge for the crude oil find in the entire Inland Basins is acquiring 3,550sq km of 3-D seismic data for processing and interpretation in addition to the already acquired 6000km of 2-D data that is currently being reprocessed,” Alison-Madueke stated then.

While the NNPC had used 2-D Data to drill 23 wells out of which two, Wadi-1 and Kinasar, were opened with non-commercial gas finding, Alison-Madueke however noted that the acquisition of the 3-D Seismic Data by NNPC could reinforce the country’s oil search and discovery in the Chad Basin.

Search Renewed
In 2016, the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, which took over from former President Goodluck Jonathan, renewed its desire to grow Nigeria’s oil reserves and said it would go back to exploration in the Chad Basin, and Benue Trough. It indicated these frontier basins could still be successfully prospected for oil.

As part of the renewed move, the NNPC subsequently announced it was stepping up measures to ensure a successful search for crude oil in the Chad Basin and other parts of the inland sedimentary basin.

It also explained that Buhari had asked it to investigate deeper into the prospectivity of some hitherto neglected finds in some areas in the North Eastern part of Nigeria with a view to taking them up for further development. “You know that very close home, we have exploration activities on the frontier basin in the Chad and some areas close to the Kolmani River where Shell had made some indicative discovery of hydrocarbons and Mr. President has directed me to go into that area to reprove and further explore the magnitude and prospectivity of those finds.

That was how they confirmed in the chad basin and used over 60billion naira for its exploration despite the fact that we were in a recession and needed the money for other things.

Yet our stubborn President went ahead to waste that money on a fruitless venture. Months later Boko haram was used as an excuse to suspend the exploration, with 60billion gone

The politics of oil. You don't have oil but you say you do. Why? so you can collect 13%. Watch it - they'll start collecting the 13% right away, because Buhari is there and wants it so.

Baru needs to provide adequate petrol in the country first before the distraction.
