Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has confirmed the outbreak of Lassa Fever in the state, saying laboratory tests have confirmed a total of 36 cases, including 9 deaths. Akeredolu, who made the revelation in Akure during a live broadcast on Saturday night, said a total of 102 suspected cases of Lassa Fever had been reported in eight local government areas of the state. “Thirty six of 79 cases have been confirmed with laboratory results, including nine deaths. “Patients are being managed at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, while confirmatory tests are done at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Irrua, Edo State. “At present, 127 hospital contacts and 308 community contacts were line-listed in all the affected local government areas while 30 had completed their follow-up,” Akeredolu said. The governor disclosed that the government had reactivated Emergency Preparedness and Response Team at state and local government level to contain the spread of the disease. He said this was in addition to active surveillance and contact tracing in the affected local government areas. “Sensitization and community mobilization are also going on in all local government areas for traditional rulers, religious leaders, political leaders, market women and other stakeholders. “Publicity is also ongoing through radio jingles, radio and television discussions in our media houses while educative materials such as handbills, flyers and posters have been produced and being distributed,” he said. According to him, vehicles have been dedicated for transportation of samples and patients to Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital. He added that the Infectious Disease Isolation Unit at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, had also been expanded. Akeredolu explained that some Personal Protective Equipment, drugs, and hospital beds were donated to FMC, Owo, while more nurses were deployed to the Treatment Centre to support management of the patients. http://www.metronaija.ng/lassa-fever-9-die-ondo-36-cases-recorded/ |

I hope prof.Isaac Adewole minister for health is going to blame this one on the carelessness of the doctors. How can only one functional Lassa fever centre is operating in the whole of this country. How can one relate this epidemic and the attitude of this present administration on blame games. During GEJ ebola outbreak there were massive sensitization campaign ranging from billboards, handbills, electronic and print media ,were all on it.There was an expressed order from Minster for health to all state commissioners for health to built Ebola response and managing centres in their various states. This was more like a serious and proactive measures to halting the spread of this disease.Government protect your citizens from the menace of LASSA fever . Lord please heal our Land of this scourge 2 Likes |

I don't understand why serious awareness is not being made on this deadly disease. Many people are even not aware of this disease, mode of transmission and prevention. Government has to do something about awareness quick. This is the lesser Ebola. 5 Likes |

SOFTENGR:ofcourse not... i'm sure the nine people that died could not be transported to ISTH because the lassa and issolation ward here has been overwhelmed federal government should please expand lassa isolation ward @ ISTH not the tent placed outside..although EU is building a Lassa institute @ ISTH, that will not be complete until well maybe end of this year. ... the president dat did not talk of fulanis killing nigerians, will he speak of a virus killing us?..may God save us...more importantly, cover ur food, garri, soup etc. because bush burning era is here, we expect that rats will leave the bush to houses.... RIP to the dead |

dechriscool: Absolutely. They even tried to employ n train staff for such epidemics. I went for d interview. Buhari trashed everything. No 1 was called back. If he allowed it, the case would be different because health professionals from all states of Nigeria were to b selected equally n trained. The current Minister is a disappointment. Imagine if Ebola was handled this way, the elite would have be razed judging from the d Sawyer man n the calibre of hospital he went for care. Now Lassa is currently pummelling the low n average class n d Minister is sashaying up n down blaming dead health workers for their own death. It's pathetic 1 Like |

The lassa epidermic is actually more serious than it has been made to seem. Only last week I know what my eyes have seen at work. Somehow somehow, the fed govt has allowed the media to go with the frenzy and distractions offered by reality show and politics, so that the epidermic remains under reported. Last last only God can have mercy on us. |

dechriscool:You couldn't have put it better. Our incompetent minister of health epitomises this administration. Its soo sad that he has not come out till today to clarify his statement. Being a prof doesn't connote wisdom. |

My husband has a trip scheduled for Ondo State, sometime this week. I watched the TV series 'Containment' last night, and now I'm thinking of telling him to postpone his trip... |
