Prof. Itse Sagay, Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC) has advised the legal team of detained Abuja Bureau chief of DAILY INDEPENDENT, Tony Ezimakor to approach the court and file an application for the enforcement of his fundamental human rights.

Ezimakor had walked into DSS headquarters in Abuja at 10.30a.m. last Wednesday to honour an invitation from the security agency, but was detained.

He was shunted from one office to the other on Wednesday and asked to wait for a particular officer, who was said to have been away from his office.

INDEPENDENT’s management had made frantic efforts through its lawyer, Mr. Douglas Ekhator, since Wednesday, to see the detained Ezimakor, but with little result.

Till today, the DSS has not issued any statement on the offence committed by Ezimakor, who, according to the wife is hypertensive and had not taken his medication since his incarceration last week.

Sagay who condemned the development said “His lawyer should file an application for his enforcement of his human rights. That will include releasing him immediately. That is the best option now”.

“So that if they don’t release him, it will be a breach of the court judgment and that will amount to contempt. So if they want that kind of unpopularity, that’s their headache” he said.
