Were you born as a English man? if not, its not a crime to know how to speaks more than a language.

There are 700 plus local dialects in Nigeria. How many do you want me to learn? I bet you if I agreed with Science being taught in Local languages, my own language will not be listed among the local languages. I am neither, Igbo, Yoruba or Hausa.

Why should your language be used and not mine?
-
The government will set itself up with having to justify 700 + plus local dialects to justify everybody. It cannot do that.

Learn English and make progress. During Easter and Christmas, go to your village and educate your parents, grand parents, chiefs and elders in your own local language all that you learnt in English. Leave the children to continue learning English.

I work as a full time editor and have worked with over 120 Nigerians in the past 18 months, see out of the 120 i worked with, not more than 3 impressed me as intelligent minds, though not even geniuses self, they were just there, the remaining 117 could barely put ideas together and convey them in english, what happens when we stretch tins further and demand interpretation in local dialect that would necessitate more mental activity? tell me

What u wrote up there validate the reason why people should be trained in the language they are familiar and comfortable with....
Very few Nigerians can fully articulate and express their thoughts in english without interjection of local language....
And that's because they don't fully think in english....
A child is best trained in a language he/she thinks....
A child's thought process cannot be in one language and yet u are teaching the child in another language....
It makes understanding and assimilation difficult....
And this is the main reason Nigerians find it difficult to connect with their environment and exploit its potential....
I just don't understand the ignorance being displayed on this thread....
My father didn't learn mathematics in school but ISIRO...
yes, he was taught maths in Yoruba in primary school....
Yet he came out with 2.1 in maths and chemistry from U.I.....
His basic understanding of maths is exemplary....
And he's among few who can fully express himself in both Yoruba and english independent of each other....
Forget all the science terminologies....
Teach maths and basic science in local language and watch how the knowledge base among students expand and students becomes more innovative, creative and curious by default.....
Every year WAEC/NECO result has been woeful despite teaching in english language....
So what's the big deal about the language......
I'll come back to advocate why MATHS MOST ESPECIALLY should be taught in LOCAL LANGUAGE....

What Government want to do is good, they want to promote our local dialects, cultures and so on.we need to support them if this will not lead to wasting of money or they set aside one day for every schools to speak in there mother tongue

This is a welcomed development. Teaching in indigenous language will help students understand the subjects better.

Re: Science, Maths Teaching In Indigenous Languages To Begin Soon –FG by musicwriter(m): 1:42pm On Mar 09, 2018
The major issue in that regard is the translation of terminologies to the languages for which we have consulted experts in different languages in the country.

Good news!. Very good news!.

All we need to do first is develop a model to carry out such translations. You cannot do that effectively without a model with rules on meanings of prefixes and suffixes, such as -ology, -ism, -tion, -ment, -ize, -lly, -er, pro-, -lity, -ing, -able, anti-, -sis, etc, in our various native languages. Once you have determined the meaning of these, then use a "root word" to manufacture new words/terminologies in our various native languages. I have provided pointers on how to do that in a book coincidentally coming out soon on this topic.

Stay tuned.

Its always very interesting wen leaders are clueless as to how to move the country forward.
Imagine, teaching in our dialects, guess WAEC n JAMB will also be written in our dialects, including post utme.
Then lecturers will also lecture in our dialects and after u graduate u use ur dialect during NYSC n to work, invariably everyone will remain within areas their dialects are spoken.
Now how will the assembly members and other public officers communicate after the current generation that communicate with English pass on?
I can see the FG has really thought this one out.
Bunch of clowns.

U guys are mixing things up...
English language is just a medium of expression, it's not education in itself.....
I'm a medical doctor and I've met people who were trained as doctors in language apart from english.....
There's no difference in quality of training and they are able to explain medical terminologies in english because medicine is the same irrespective of the language u are trained with......
Companies manuals or whatever can be translated and explained in whatever language so long as the translator can read n understands the content.....

The Chinese building your roads, railways and bridges in that country uses manuals that are written in Chinese letters....
Yet without them no infrastruture gets done in that country....
It's done deliberately so that Nigerian engineers working with them don't get to copy, read or learn without their permission....
Your so called engineers trained in english remain helpless as they watch their Chinese counterparts refuse to transfer technical knowledge except they choose to do so....
U guys should wise up....
Knowledge is power, irrespective of language....
So much for ignorance....

Peter Dada, Akure
The Federal Government has said that the teaching of science subjects and mathematics in indigenous languages in primary and secondary schools across the country would commence soon.
Director-General of the National Centre for Technology Management, Prof. Okechukwu Ukwuoma, stated this during a retreat organised for researchers in Akure, capital of Ondo State.
Ukwuoma, who is a member of a committee set up to supervise the project, also disclosed that experts were contracted to translate science and mathematics terminologies to the various indigenous languages spoken in the country.
He said, “Last year, the Minister of Science and Technology and the Minister of Education inaugurated a committee to teach science and mathematics in indigenous languages. The major issue in that regard is the translation of terminologies to the languages for which we have consulted experts in different languages in the country.
The don, who commended the Federal government on the idea, expressed optimism in the success of the project. He also noted that many textbooks had already been translated to some Nigerian languages through the efforts of the committee.
The NACETEM boss stressed the need for researchers to contribute toward the development of science and technology in the country. He lamented the lack of good research works in the country, blaming it on the lust for quick and easy money amongst the people.
“All over the world everything about science and technology is always hard to sell because you need to convince people. Nigerians are good researchers, but they lack something.
“Many businessmen who are supposed ensure the commercialisation of research inventions prefer to buy fake ones outside the country and come back to make quick money,” he said.
However, Ukwuoma disclosed that the Federal Government had established a National Research and Innovation Fund, which would be accessed by entrepreneurs or innovators interested in developing science and technology inventions
The don said, “Information is what people need.
When people lack information, they find it very difficult to find solution to some problems. So we need really to get some information about what is going on.”
