Nzeogwu coup was meant to install Awolowo as Prime Minister of Nigeria – Dr Ezeife

A former governor of Anambra State, Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife has disclosed that the failed Major Nzeogwu-led coup of 1966 was never an Igbo coup, stressing that it was meant to install Chief Obafemi Awolowo as the Prime Minister of Nigeria.

He made this known at the second day of the Igbo-Israeli Economic Summit titled South East Youth Economic Summit 2016 (SEYES 2016) which ended in Enugu yesterday.

Ezeife asserted that “it is not true that Igbos plotted the 1966 coup. The coup was planned by some elements within the military disenchanted with the drift of Nigeria who felt that Awolowo was in the best position to move Nigeria forward. The problem was that the execution of the coup got awry at some axis and everybody now claimed it was Igbo coup.”

He stated further that “the coup failed and General Ironsi carved provinces in Nigeria to help each group govern themselves better. They said that he was running a unitary system and killed him, yet Nigeria s practicing the same system for which...

Propaganda at its' peak!! shocked Ezeife was a good student of Chukwumerije, the grand commander of propaganda. undecided Ezeife could never provide evidence to support this comment. There was absolutely no proof to substantiate his statement, yet you jokers keep reciting it. Na wa for una! Even Nzeogwu never said that Awolowo recruited them to carry out a coup for him. He only claimed it was a plan of the coupists. And those who know Awolowo said he would never have agreed to such a thing!

Colonel Wale Ademoyega would tell you it was not an Igbo coup. The only reason propagandists were able to get away with the fraudulent scammism [sic] that it was an Igbo coup was because Igbos dominated the officer corps then. That is also why Ironsi became President after crushing the coup.

And the ibos had to kill him
Like Yorubas and other non Igbos weren't involved in the coup, various accounts of the coup by unbiased foreign reports with existing details available on the internet database as well as various books, interviews, and journals on the attack on Balewa (which was confirmed by Nzeogwu himself when interviewed ) revealed that the troops that followed Nzeogwu that night to attack the prime Minister were predominantly Northerners, they willingly marched with Nzeogwu and were very much enthusiastic and even blood thirsty to take out Balewa which surprised Nzeogwu himself. The problem with historical revisionist like you (though I can't really blame your ignorance since there is no detailed syllabus on Nigerian history in the academic institutions there), is that you hinge on half truths, bask on recycled lies more so out of ethnic sentiment than a genuine willingness to read and be enlightened.... thus eluded by reality, and then spread that ignorance... and the epidemic of fact distortions continues to pervade the generational cycle of Nigerians... sad thing is this is the same lie you will also tell your children, and the seed of ignorance transitions like a chain reaction.

Who said Awolowo recruited them? Maybe you. There is no evidence to suggest that Awolowo recruited them.

But there is ample evidence to suggest that the plotters, Wale Ademoyega, Kaduna Nzeogwu and Ifeanyi Ifeajuna planned to use their January 1966 coup to spring Awolowo from jail where he was after being convicted of coup plotting in 1962 and make him Prime Minister.

And we are saying these dudes should have resigned from the military and joined Awolowo's party to campaign for him instead of trying to use force.

You see, when you persist in recycling lies, it makes you look thoroughly silly. undecided You claimed they were military supporters of Awolowo, not so? How? When and where was this so-called support drawn up, to engage the services of Ifeajuna, Nzeogwu and his clique? It was simply an idea conceived in the minds of Ifeajuna, Nzeogwu and co. Awolowo was NEVER a part of it, and had never expressed a desire for their support. So what crap are you recycling here? shocked

T9ksy:
Una don start again, huh. which ethnic divide are u reffering to? The inner circle of the coupists comprises of one yoruba and four Igbo Majors. And this constitute your idea of "cutting across the ethnic divide within the country"? I beg, carry go jo with your twisting all logic on its head, ojare. Its a pity/coincidence that the killings didn't "cut across the ethnic divide within the country"  grin

Here we go, again. No way could Ademoyega be made to wear the toga of "leader of the coup". Yeah, he was the co-ordinator but that does not make him the "leader". To put it bluntly, what influence does one yoruba major have over four igbo majors, two of whom (Nzeogwu and Ifeajunna) were his senior in rank. He was the last major to be recruited and at the eleventh hr so by no stretch of the imagination can Ademoyega be conferred with that hideous title "leader".
Onibara  e nba ole bo. Your beggar is surreptitiously morphing into an armed bandit!!!

Another fallacy. Major Ifeajunna was the original creator of the coup. Ademoyega was recruited at the last minute, probably as an afterthought to give a semblance of the coup "cutting across the ethnic divide within the country".

source pls grin
The Police report stated differently.

Guy, I had to transfer your comments here from the other thread. Your people have started again, o! They claim Awolowo was supported by the coupists of the January 1966 putsch, which was staged by Ifeajuna, Nzeogwu and co! cheesy

the coup came about bcuz the population were fed up with the political class and d crisis in the west
ifeajuna was a known radical from his university days and other officers were drawn in by his charisma and zeal.
the senior officers like ironsi, maimalari and ogundipe were too "old skul" and apolitical and would have stopped any coup infact all the orders used during the coup were false
finally seeing as the coup caught the whole land by surprise, its hard to say it had unknown leaders

You were the one who started waving around Ezeife's garrulous unverified comments, in an attempt to build up a silly fallacious argument, about how the coup was meant to be in favour of Awolowo. Ademoyega's book only contains watery excuses for his role in the coup. It was short on facts, and rather long on rhetoric. What can one expect from someone who was brought in at the last minute, and was not privy to the planning and scheming of those who actually designed & instigated the coup, from the very beginning?

I have read Ademoyega's book from cover to cover. sad I can even give you a list of other books, that would shed more light on the fact that Ademoyega dwelt more in the realm of conjecture and rhetoric, than facts. Please educate yourself, and match brake on top this your tales by moonlight.

Different books on the events that took place at that time, need to be read along with other accounts of the coup, in order to compare the different perspectives, so that readers can draw their own conclusions.
Please read the following:

1). Oil, Politics and Violence: Nigeria's Military Coup Culture (1966-1976) by Max Siollun
Published by Algora Publishing (2009) 268pp.
ISBN-13: 978-0875867083
ISBN-10: 0875867081
Read the review here: https://maxsiollun./my-book/

According to Nigerian scholars in 2011, over 69 books and pamphlets, 53 government publications, 3 bibliographies and various theses have
been published on the different coups in this country, as well as the subsequent 30 month long Nigerian Civil War which took place between 1967 and 1970. In the US, over 2,000 books were written about their own civil war.

So there is still a need to write more. People need to tell their stories about what happened during that period, because in the words of Chimamanda Adichie "we all remember differently."
