Tunde Ajibulu, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday said President Muhammadu Buhari was quoted out of context over his statement at the Commonwealth Business Forum describing Nigerian youths as lazy and not ready to work.

Speaking at the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Jos where he is undertaking a course, Ajibulu said given the huge role Nigerian youths played in President Buhari’s emergence in 2015, there is no way he could have described them in derogatory terms especially in the international community.

He said what President Buhari probably meant was that a lot of young Nigerians are disinterested in what is happening politically in the country and that is largely responsible for low voter turnouts witnessed during elections. This according to him is justified.

His words “I believe President Muhammadu Buhari was taken out of context. To me, it didn’t sound like he was saying that young people in Nigeria are lazy in general. Everyone knows that he received substantial support from the youths in his election and they are a large reason why he got into power, so he wouldn’t cast this dispersion upon lots of his own supporters”.

“What he might have meant instead was at times, some can be politically apathetic. There are low voter turnouts amongst the youths and that explains why there is a dearth of youth inclusion in the Nigerian polity, so in that context he is right!”.

“Instead of seeing this as a slight, the youth should take this as a clarion call to stand up and be counted so they can wield electoral clout and take their position driving this nation forward”.

” Power is in the hands of the youths and they can exercise it by getting their voters cards, voting en masse and making political leaders accountable for their actions. Decisions are made by those who show up. It is time the youths show up and make themselves heard” he said.

Now they are all scampering trying to give softlanding to a president that is out of touch with reality.

Nothing edifying and encouraging can come out of the this president because all his mind has been trained to see the good in others, the youth inclusive. If he is not calling them lazy, you find him calling hard-working Nigerians in diaspora "criminals".
