And The Young, Handsome, Full-Of-Life, Albeit Naïve Youngster Gruesomely Took His Own Life!

Earlier today, news of an 8-year-old boy who reportedly took his own life after being beaten by his younger brothers in a video game at FMC, an Area in Abuja – capital of Nigeria –, made the rounds.
According to the source who shared the story online:

“He was playing with his younger brothers. He lost and went inside the room and hanged himself. His parents were not around when it happened”.

Now, one would wonder why a boy of such tender age would take his own life because he lost in a game and even how he knew about suicide and how such is carried out in the first place.
According to the same source:

“When the parents got home and inquired into what had happened and how and where the boy had learnt about suicide, they learnt that the boy had learnt about suicide in batman and superman movies he had seen”.
Not surprisingly, the lad had learnt how to take his own life in movies!

Who knows how many of our children and young adults are also nursing the idea of experimenting suicides, just as they have seen in movies? In fact, we do not need to wonder whether or not it is happening: it is actually trending!

Someone, commenting on nairaland.com where the story was shared, narrated how his neighbour’s child almost took his own life, too, in the name of imitating ‘superman’. According to him:

“A neighbour’s kid tied his mum’s wrapper round his neck in the name of acting superman. (he injured himself and ) he is currently recuperating in one popular hospital around Ajiwe in Ajah Lagos.

Some others who have not learnt suicide have learnt manslaughter, murder and homicide! These, among others, are the evil that ‘movies and music not controlled for children’ is capable of instigating.

Once, a story of a young girl in one of the western countries who took her own life because she was depressed was shared. The story had it that she had just listened to a suicide-induced song moment before she took her life.

Now, someone would ask, ‘What is this world turning to?’

It is turning to something bad: something so bad that we cannot fully fathom; and that we must do all that is needed to put end to.

Parents need to understand that their parental duties span beyond just providing for material needs of their children. They need to be connected to their children both physically and emotionally, too. It is clear that the parents of the young boy were not emotionally connected to the child. Otherwise, he would not have come up with suicide as a response to a trivial issue as being won in a game. Through emotional connection, parent would be able to know the emotional vulnerabilities of their children and how to work on such.

Of course, there were diverse of reactions to the incidence. Some believed it was spiritual and some believed the boy was just stupid to have not been able to differentiate the fantasies he saw in movies from reality.

Someone, also on nairaland.com, by the username ShyCypher said:

“He is not the only 8-year old in Nigeria or the world to lose in a video game – we all did. Why haven’t the remaining 8-year-old video game losers committed suicide? Because they are psychologically stronger than that – they are intelligent enough to differentiate between reality and fantasy. This one has a problem distinguishing and paid for it with his life”.

While ShyCypher is partly right, what we all need to understand is that as humans, our temperaments are not the same and emotional intelligence in people does not grow at the same pace. While some children can easily react to situation rightly even when there are no adults around to guide them, some cannot. In fact, the latter children always mess things up to point of irredeemability whenever they attempt to make some emotional decisions.

The pivot point is that different strokes should be meted to different folks. When it comes to parenting and child upbringing, parents should try to know what works for which child. It must not be same way you dealt with child A that you should deal with B. While your goal is the same – to train children who are respectful, hardworking and honest –, the method through which you train them does not necessarily need to be the same. Study each child and try to figure what works for him or her. And, by so doing, we would have children who would grow to make their parents proud; not ones who bring shame and sorrow to the family,

May God guide our children to take the right steps in every situation!
