lol see lie o!!! the east was enjoying protein before the war o. the stock fish was only brought in to counter the protein energy malnutrition after the biafrans started starving. the question is where were the biafrans getting their proteins from before? grin

see link below to read on how stock fish was introduced after the malnutrition already started

Not really. We aren't able to process it. We export to import. Same thing with oil, which is why although Nigeria exports a lot of oil, it's still expensive to buy.

That aspect is being addressed by Govt and smart investors / entrepreneurs.. This video provides some answers ..

You already know the story of refined petroleum products with Dangote refinery and modular refineries starting production by 2019
Where we are going is better than where we are coming from.

I'm not going to entirely praise this report. Processed cocoa whether eventually exported or consumed locally would have been much better.

It is such a pity that after so many years we are still content to export cocoa for peanuts and still make noise about it, when we could be exporting chocolate and cocoa drinks and make mega bucks but 'whosai'? Who cares about chocolate when we have 'oyel' money.

The technology for converting cocoa to chocolate is out there. All we need is one governor from the Southwest that has 'shikini' sense to invest in a chocolate factory and we are all set to make mega millions. But, they'll all rather line up every second Wednesday at the FEC to share national cake. Such a pity.

Don't mind those two idiotic and illiterate posters above. Every single economic statistic for Nigeria is positive! The naira has become stable, inflation has been declining for 15 consecutive months now and is at 12.5, foreign reserve accretion is nearing USD50 billion thanks to prudent management and rising oil price, GDP is at its highest since q4 2015 at >2%.
The kind of economics those idiot posters above prefer is the economics of distributing N100 naira and Bags of rice on the street Fayose style. As if the cocoa farmer is not a common man.

It is not as simple as that. The chocolate market is in the EU and the US and the value added sector is dominated by multinationals like Nestle and Kraft which owns Cadbury. They dominate the market with established brands and market power.
Mars ,Snickers,KitKat etc arerecognizable brands that have been around for generations. We could try China but even they would rather add value themselves

The reality is non-EU or non-US businesses stand no chance of entering those market without those countries/blocs demanding access to our markets and throwing up hurdles.

Besides who has the markket power? Chocolate making is easy but having dominant brands is not easy.
It is not for small players but I believe a Dangote can succeed and even has the capital to acquire existing players

Why is Buhari and Kemi Adeosun pegging our budget on Niger Delta crude oil prices instead of cocoa prices if the farmers are contributing a significant amount into government revenue/GDP?

We are not setting up companies.

When we set up businesses welike one man show businesses which invariably die with the founder.

Every rich Western Country has at least one multinational.

The Asian countries are a bit different butthey protect their markets and have well developed manufacturing

Nigerians need to develop the practice of 3-5 people coming together to form a business that can survive them. Some companies have taken over a hundred years to get to where they are now

Consider Alaba Market

Hundreds of players Alaba e.g should be under ONE PLAYER . How many of those traders at Alaba can gain audience with the CEO of Sony? How many of them can get the discounts Walmarts gets. How manyare in a position to replace or refund defective products

I mention Alaba because it has been there for more than 30 years but has not grown as much as one would expect. If Alaba International had been ONE COMPANY under one management we couldbetelling a different story today

That is because the industry is fragmented with too many players. What is needed is consolidation and maybe even listing on the stock exchange with no morethan 20-40 retailers. Let them come together pool resources form a big company and leverage their size.

Tha culture of doing business using a company that is not personal property is what we need to imbibe
We are naturally dishonest and mistrustful of each other and so every business is a one man show even Mechanics tailors etc.

Our people like the idea of being self employed but in an industrialized world there must be consolidation

Nigeria’s cocoa export rises

MAY 19, 2018

OVER 300,000 tonnes of cocoa was exported from Nigeria last year, Executive Director, the Partnership in the Niger Delta, (PIND), Dr. Dara Akala, has said.

Akala spoke in Akure, Ondo Stste capital, during the Cocoa Value Chain Study Validation Workshop. “2017 saw an increase in the quantity of cocoa exported from Nigeria rising from about 250,000 tonnes exported in 2016 to more than 300,000 tonnes in 2017”, he said. “The increase was triggered by the devaluation of the Naira in 2016 by the Nigerian government in a bid to wade off recession. “While the devaluation of the Naira and subsequent increase in tariffs or outright ban of certain imported goods led to a 30% loss in the value of Nigeria’s currency in comparison to the United States of America’s Dollar.”

Nonetheless, he stated that products like cocoa enjoyed increased demand and production because of its viability as an export product. Akala urged government at all levels and other development partners to utilize the economic potentials available in cocoa production to cushion the effects of global oil doom. “As Nigeria’s cocoa production and export began to increase in 2017, the Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND) carried out a value chain study of the sector between January and April 2018,” he said. The PIND Market Development Projects Manager, James Elekwachi, said ‘’cocoa sector has the growth potential and the opportunity to increase income and employment for millions of people, especially the unskilled and semi-skilled in the region.”

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, also speaking at the occasion, revealed that the state government has embarked on several revolutionary measures to optimally utilize the cocoa potentials in the state for massive development.

We still have them. Whether that is what we need is another matter
I am not a huge fan.

I thinkwe need serious businesses with big capital.

Let us look at a very simple business.

i.e
butchery

If I have 1 billion I could negotiate with cow sellers and buy cattle at dscount > I could in some states be the only butcher company and use that arrangement to crash the price of meat of course thereisthe risk that if I have a monopoly of an oligopoly we could misbehave but this can be checked

Potentially you have a more efficient arrangement fo rdelivering beef of any of our foodstuffs.Such a player can invest in logistic infrastucture e.g commercial refrigeration and eliminate waste

So even simple things like selling meat can be made more efficient when you organize as a company

Again let us consider furniture making. Is there any such company in Nigeriaand how big?

Like I saidthey are processing it already but there are limits to what they can export because some countries simply will not allow you to sell anything but cocoa beans. They come up with all kinds of obstacles and claims of quality contamination etc. Many businessmen have been frustrated and it is clear that progress cannot be made unless a deal is made with the EU who are insisting on signing agreements to allow them access to your own markets too.

Nigeria too does erect barriers to imports e.g we claim to ban rice and the want full access to our market

No one is blocked from processing cocoa but there is a huge block in selling because SOMEBODY is doing that processing today and once you start you become competitors. The question is who is that somebody and how powerful arethey inthose countries

Nigeria has never had a good track record complyng with standards and our products often fail on hygiene and contamination grounds.

I remember issues with beans a few years ago.

Cocoa can be processed but this takes effort ,indeed we could grow our local consumption but again this is better done by a big company that is truly Nigerian not the likes of Nestle
