The Kogi State West Senatorial District Representing at National Assembly, Dino Melaye, has contended an honor of Grand Commander of Federal Republic (GCFR), announced by President Muhammadu Buhari, as been a wrong recognition for presumed winner of June 12, 1993 election winner, Late MKO Abiola, since he was longer alive.

Malaye, contending the announced honor, cautioned Buhari against breaching constitution and that such a recognition was only meant for the living.

However, the president had, 25 years after the election, directed the honor be conferred on Abiola and declared June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day to further honour the presumed 1993 election winner.

Buhari also directed Abiola’s running mate, Babagana Kingibe, be conferred with the second highest honour of Grand Commander of the Niger (GCON).

Meanwhile, the GCFR was exclusive to presidents and former presidents until President Shehu Shagari conferred it on Obafemi Awolowo in the Second Republic.

Citing Chapter 43(2) of National Honours Act on Thursday at the assembly, Melaye argued that the act does not allow for conferment of the honours on non-Nigerians.
