First, I studied Mechanical Engineering with a good grade by God's grace. When it comes to the industries like chemical industry, Brewery industry, oil and gas, manufacturing etc Electrical and electronics, Machatronics(Now and future, when we talk of automation, robotics, AI etc), and mechanical engineering are leading. Having worked in one of the chemical companies and checked adverts from companies like Shell, Mobil, Dangote, Sabmiller or AB InBv, etc the above are leading.

My friend studied EEE but today he is with one of the telecom companies in Nigeria, foreign and multinational one. I have a professor who studied EEE but he later did electronics and telecommunication Engineering. He is also a software consultant.

EEE will present to you with various opportunities across all industries Include mechanical and mechatronics.

Software engineering and information and telecommunication engineering are still good. When you study EEE at undergraduate level, you can still do your MSc in Software engineering or information and telecommunication engineering. The two are good for the future.

As far me, I will choose EEE which will give me Opportunities in Software engr or information and telecommunication engr and mechanical engr where you can also do your MSc in Mechatronics.

Largely, mechanical engineering is the broadest discipline in engineering and you have a lot of areas to specialise more than any engineering discipline on Earth. You can also be a software engineer as a mechanical Engineer in areas like AI, robotics and automation. AI, robotics and automation are all electromechanical.

IN MY OWN OPINION THE BEST COURSE TO STUDY IS CIVIL ENG. AS FAR AS THIS COUNTRY IS CONCERN because OF THE ABILITY TO VISUALIZE MOST OF THE THEORIES YOU ARE BEEN TAUGHT IN SCHOOL AS MANY NIGERIAN INSTITUTION ARE NOT HAVING ENOUGH PRACTICAL EQUIPMENT SECONDLY IF YOU ARE THE SERIOUS TYPE YOU CAN EASILY BE SELF EMPLOYED.
Re: The Best Engineering Course To Study In Nigeria? by GMbuharii: 2:45pm On Jun 19, 2018
Obeflacko:
you can be self employed, ppl will neglect it but as long as there is a vast ocean and fishes, wealth is abundant, for intance one can get a fishing trawler and make something out of it,its not necessarily one will be at sea all the time.

a fishing trawler, just like that? In nigeria?
Marine engnrs hardly wud wanna own a fishing trawler.
But if you can get intl certification and get an engineering contract frm a foreign agent, all good. But in Nig,be ready to be under paid unless u have 'legs' in coys like LNNG or Shell or Mobil.

The fact is all engineering courses are good. What matters is the grade u graduated with wether pet, mech, chem, e/e, civil etc. As for those condemning petroleum engineering, the unemployment situations in Nigeria is not limited to only petroleum engineering graduates. It cuts across all disciplines. Just study what u have passion for and make sure u come out with good grade. I have even seen the so called elec, mech, civil, chem, graduates roaming the street. There are petroleum engineering guys that are swimming in money also. Remember that petroleum engineering graduates are not much compared to other popular engineering disciplines. It is true petroleum engineering is narrow but also a good course.

which is the best engineering course to study in nigeria base on employment and salary a friend mine said it petroleum engineering
which the you is the best

Any engineering course is good ( However with Electrical Electronics Engineering you can work anywhere) the most important thing is for you to be very serious and make 1st Class or at worst 2/1 but if you be Tinubu son you can come out with Pass or third class.

Bruhhh i will go for Civil Engineering anytime
.. All other Engineering, you cant stand alone. Bear it in mind bro, there is no job in Nigeria, people build houses everyday, once your good with designs and construction, people will bid for you. EE,CE,PE,ME etc you have to be employed to enjoy that profession...
Another thing is can your head carry the physics in EE , or can you head carry the Chemistry in Chemical Engineering or Petroleum engineering... Civil Engineering is still the simplest..lol to me o.. And the surest, cos you can work alone.
I have worked with some engineers. Just one duplex that they buil, they made nothing less than 5million. Now imagine building about 20 per year.. Do you need any Job again?? But EE well except you start cutting nepa light..lmao...just kidding tho..

And if your fortunate enough to get some Civil Engineering contracts, just one, can change your life forever, imagine building a hotel thats to cost about 500million naira...or a government contract.. Its not easy tho, but you'll get there.

Some engineers i know, just site inspection alone for one day, theyre paid 50k-100k ..smooth

To answer you directly, Electrical Engineering gives you the most options, not only in Nigeria but also anywhere else in the world you may later find yourself. Then if you are going for Electrical Engineering, do not join the bandwagon of electronics, telecommunication, computer engineering etc. There are too many specialists in that area already. Go for Power System Engineering and sub-specialise on renewable energy systems. That is the future. That said.

If I may ask, why are you interested in studying engineering in Nigeria? If all your plan is to graduate and start looking for job, you may want to reconsider. Most Nigerian Engineering graduates are unemployable without retraining. You will be trained with outdated curriculum and exposed to little or no practicals (some private universities like CU are quite better anyway, though still below international standard). When you graduate, you will have to take aptitude tests with thousands of 'Engineers' jostiling for typically 10slots of a Trainee Engineer position. The remaining graduates who fail to clinch the slots usually end up in banks or embracing 'IT' grin Those 'Trainee Engineer' positions are even fizzling out gradually as they cost companies lots of money and successfull trainees usuallly seek greener pastures. Nigerian Engineering graduates are now expected to go and acquire those skills themselves through post-graduate hands-on training within or outside Nigeria. That is why most advertiesed 'Trainee Engineer' positions include 0-2years experience as part of the requirements. For example, an Electrical Engineering graduate with HND or B.Sc. and Mechatronics training certificate from IIT will be picked for Automation Engineer position over a B.Sc. or B.Eng. Mechatronics graduate without post-graduate training or experience. In essence, if all you plan is to study engineering, graduate and look for a job, you must set aside at least 500k for post-graduate professional training (2milllion naira is ideal for training outside Nigeria) if you don't want to end up dumping your engineering degree for teaching, banking, software development, marketing... grin

Baba he would regret it o. Got to Andela and CCHub in Lagos, their best programmers didn't study comp Sci. Some don't even have a degree. Don't mislead the public please.
Computer science is not all about programing. Even in software development writing the code/ programing is just a tiny aspect. Due to low barrier to entry in the programing field everybody now feels computer scientist are no longer important. In terms of software development sef have you ever seen Nigerians build world class software that will power rockets or driverless cars. Or super apps like uber. The answer is emphatic No. Because the industry is saturated by deadbeat coders that think they are hippsters with know formal training or ideas about what software engineering is all about.

The Fundamental Engineering Courses are

Mechanical
Electrical
Civil
and more recently added to the list is Chemical.

Pick the one you think you will do best at.

As for job prospects, I think there are more technical jobs advertised in Civil/Structural than the others.

As for versatility, I think Mechanical edges it. Most Project Engineers, Engineering Managers, and Project Managers are from Mechanical Eng background.

I am a Chartered Engineer with 13 yrs experience in Nuclear and Oil and Gas.

NB: the above info is based on the UK job market, apologies I cant say about Naija, I have never applied for a job there.

Bros, you made some salient points. However, the issue of retraining graduates of some professional disciplines is a standard practice all over the globe. There is what is called job-specific training, where you are taught the nitty gritty of the role you'll be assigned to. That been said, one may only argue that it will take perhaps more time to bring onstream a graduate from this clime than his counterpart in the advanced world.

Also, that an engineering graduate can seamlessly walk into other fields further emphasizes its versatility in comparison to other fields.

Job-specific training is understandable because of dynamic company policies and different engineering standards. For example, if you are trained as an Engineer in the UK, you will be farmiliar with British and European engineering codes and may need job-specific training if you are taking up a design role in a Chinese company. Retraining 'graduates' generally is however not a standard practice all over the world. Rather in saner climes, they ensure you are certified professionally before you graduate in the real sense of it. The problem in Nigeria is that we do not take Engineering for the critical profession that it is just like we take Medicine and Law seriously. Will you be recognised as a Doctor or Lawyer without passing your professional exams? There used to be a policy known as SITSIE (Supervised Industrial Training Scheme in Engineering) designed to train Nigerian Engineering undergraduates for two years after HND or B.Sc. before they'll be allowed to go for NYSC and seek employment as professionals. What happened to SITSIE? We allowed it to die while the Law schools and Medical colleges are thriving and we are wondering what happened to the Engineering profession. Many don't even know what Engineering is all about. You don't call yourself an Engineer without neccessary certifications and experience in well organised societies. You will be arrested and prosecuted. What we have in Nigeria however is a situation where quackery is seriously frowned at especially in Medicine and Law but overlooked in Engineering. As a result, we allowed the Engineering profession to die slowly and it's now buried. When Chinese companies took over virtually all major Engineering projects in Nigeria, Nigeria Society of Engineers protested and guess what? No one took them seriously... grin

Thank you for this insight. Computer Science is gradually suffering the fate of Engineering in Nigeria with the mentality that it is all about 'programming' just like the thought that engineering is all about maintenance and repair. What many term programming is just coding, that is writing instructions in a language the computer understands. Programming is far deeper than that as it requires critical thinking and deep knowledge of algorithm and data structure.

Why you dey waste your time self to explain?. I normally laugh when people say that why go to university to study computer science when a secondary school leaver can just code. People think computer science is about programming. It is like saying why go to read civil engineering or building engineering when baba bricklayer can build a house by joining blocks together.

Well said. I studied I. T management software engineering option and I'm always shocked to hear people ask me how many facebooks have I built. Forgeting that programing is just an aspect of software development and even Mark zuckerberg's facebook cannot be as big as it is without the interdesciplinary cotribution of researchers, coders, designers managers. Testers, product managers and whole lot of people that can't even write a simple line of 'hello world'.

Baba your head is there. But it is left to those that know to change the narrative. I'm always pained when some school drop out/wannabe bill gates with no formal schooling/training claim they are better than those that spent years in the university. Forgeting that in a proper world class software project they are not different to mere bricklayers or laborers in a construction site that can be easily thrown out the door.

Agricultural engineering. When you are done, borrow from a bank and start mechanized farming (cattle rearing combined with poultry farming). In 10 years, you will be rich enough to buy the bank and the university that trained you. The only application you will need to write after graduation is for a bank loan. No job hunting, no "I humbly apply" bull.shit.
