So, I went to a friend's house caught him on his laptop learning programming. I thought he was watching porn but I was impressed when he showed me his John Hopkins' certificate.

After getting this certification online, he enrolled for another one immediately. I had to take a screenshot of his laptop.

"Which organization gave you the cert?" I asked. "It's Coursera which is affiliated with different international universities," he replied. "Wow!" I exclaimed.

I had to Google Coursera and landed myself on their website. As someone who loves to learn more, I registered immediately.

The moral of the story is: You can learn anything online if you're determined. I created a thread about three skills everyone should learn. Check it out.

Coursera will make you a great programmer. The cert is accepted world wide. That's what my friend's friend is using. That's what he used to get employed.

In your case, don't wait for employment, but build things that'll make you employ people. I have used my phone to make millions and I know you can do better. The government is a useless government, so don't hope on them.

A laptop is needed. It's like a virtual school. After you gain access to the virtual class, an instructor will guide you on all you need — video instructor.

You'll do assignment and projects. Don't be scared, Honey, they're simple. The Oyibo instructors are experts in explaining things in a lay man's language.

I asked him how many gigs he spent and he said he did a 3GB subscription twice and the course lasted for 5 weeks or thereabout.

So, a laptop is needed, but for now, register with your phone just like I did. See image below.

100+k, but he did it for free. On this site, there is a US Aid you need to apply for. It will take two weeks to be approved. Almost everyone gets approved. The moment it gets approved, it's free — the course is free. If you're a big man and love paying for everything, then you can ignore the aid and take the bull by the horn.

It's a school. You need to apply for aid, else, you'll need to pay school fees. After registering, go through their menus and you'll see where to apply for free aid. After application, it will take two weeks to be approved. For me, I only registered, but haven't applied.

Since I'm new with Coursera, I wouldn't want to say what I don't know.

My friend did HTML, CSS, and Javascript course for free and he has been issued a globally approved Johns Hopkins' certificate. Now, he's doing PHP, SQL, and Java for free.

There are different universities to choose from. Since I don't know much about Coursera, Google search or a YouTube search will be of help too.

Though, I'll enrol soon for one of the courses when I'm free to feel how it feels.

My co-authors haven't arrived yet. They hate progress.

Though Coursera has many free courses, some advance level and even introductory courses involve some payment for you to get a verified certificate.
You can take an individual course (and earn a verified certificate) or a group of courses to earn a Specialisation certificate

The payments could range from $49 to 100s of dollars.
But it's a cheap way of getting some good education

Yes and no. If you want free one, you'll get it. If you want a paid one, you'll get it. My friend's friend got a free one and he's using it to work in a big ICT company. His salary is FAT.

To get funding, you will have to apply and prove that paying the fees will make you poorer.

You can't get the aid through the app as the option isn't there. Goto the webpage, browse to your course of choice & you will see apply for financial aid.
