The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), has fined DAAR Communications (owner of AIT/Raypower) N500,000 for persistent violation of the provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

NBC’s Head of Public Affair, Maimuna Jimada, via a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, said comments made on Raypower’s programme “Political Platform” was against the broadcasting code.

Mrs Jimada said that the organisation was sanctioned due to “provocative, inflammatory and divisive comments” by anchors of the political platform.

She said the Commission on May 2, 2017, Aug. 15, 2017 and February 2018, held meetings with staff of DAAR Communications to caution them on unprofessional manner of anchors of the programme.

She stated that the Commission had charged the team handling the programme to be fair, and balance their reportage.

According to her, during the Feb. 7 meeting, the Commission stressed the need to comply with the broadcasting code to avoid sanctions.

“The Political Platform episode on July 24, was marked by sensational and heated expression of opinion by its anchors, who went on to make unproven and inciting allegations.

“For avoidance of doubt, the Director-General drew the attention of DAAR Communications to the following provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code: (1) Section 1.9.3:

“A presenter/anchor shall not express his or her personal opinion in a programme.”

“Also Section 5.2.7: ‘A broadcaster shall, in using political material for news, avoid taking inflammatory and divisive matter in its provocative form and Section 5.2.5 stated that political broadcasts shall be in decent language,’’ she said.

Mrs Jimada reiterated that broadcasting stations should ensure that anchors of their programmes were properly informed and trained on the ethics of the profession as well as the provisions of the broadcasting code.

This government have been doing everything possible to gag the media houses. But, it's always a futile effort. Because the last government allowed them have their field day with hate campaign and speeches in 2014.
Now Nigerian are practicing what they taught them, they are running round the clock to shut Nigerians up. E no go work. He who is at war with heat, shouldn't near the kitchen.

Political platform is the most enlightening and unbiased political program on radio. APC is Clamping down on press freedom. APC have started putting on ground mechanisms to rig in 2019. We are watching

Ray power knows the rules.
They're not the first to be fined, and they won't be the last.

A radio station in Ekiti too was temporarily closed for going against journalism ethics.
Did they tell you why they were fined?
You don't know why, but you wanna blame Buhari all the same

Surely there has to be a way to contest these fines? Absolute imposition of penalty on the media for views/publications, without option of appeal, opens the regulatory authority to inherent abuse.

Transcripts of the erring opinions must also be released to the public for comparison with available evidences. History is replete with laws covered with the veneer of public good, that were exploited by governments into tools of autocratic repression.

if you don't listen to the program "political platform" please don't hastily criticise NBC I was an ardent listener of the program until the build up to the 2015 general election, Ihedu Aniagwu now Chief Press Secretary to the Delta State Government was still in DAAR Communication, he was a huge disappointments to ethical journalism, he was a PDP presenter.
Another presenter on the program that should be sanctioned is Ijeoma Osamo although she doesn't know anything other than castigate APC and other tribes other than Igbos.
Mustapha Mohammed is another person on the said program that needs to be cautioned , he supports anything Hausa/Muslim blindly. the only anchor in the program that is not totally guilty of breeching broadcasting ethics is Amaechi Anakwe, Uju Eje and Adebayo Bodunrin the only veteran broadcaster among them.

Please, also provide me links where El'Rufai insulted Gej or made any incisive comment before the 2015 election. I'll really appreciate it.
But one thing you must understand is, whether Apc or Pdp, our politicians are all the same .
That why good ppl who know whats good have to start getting involved in politics.

Phone in programmes nowadays, you can insult or curse out the PDP or any of it's members without wahala but the moment you question the APC or FG's buffoonery, you get cut off or fined by the powers that be. One fact these demons and their devil Buhari fail to realize is that the truth can't be hidden forever, very soon, the blood of innocents shall rise to fight them back hands down, their propaganda stops at their nose and a new day is coming for Nigeria VERY VERY SOON cool

Your I observations are right but my problem is why BON is not also sanctioning some radio station whose presenters unethically campaign for APC ?

I think it's time for broadcast organizations to test BON's interference in court. Broadcast organizations shouldn't just assume that because BON has power to sanction it can do so to satisfy vested interest of some in govt.

TAKE BON TO COURT let's know if they're right simple.

I don't miss it for anything....

But freedom of press is important in a democracy..

Mustapha Muhammad loves the north and APC

Ijeoma osamo loves the south and PDP

Amaechi and Adebayo are balanced

I say it's a good show.... Only terrorists are afraid of being exposed

If not that Social media is off the power of this tyrant govt, I'm sure they would seize everybody's phones by now to stop the so called "inflammatory" comments made by Nigerians everyday.

Can we just do away with Old cargoes that are recycled to become civilians again?

Kudos to NBC, this is long over due.

I used to listen to the program but, since Jonathan lost to Buhari, those Guys became bias in their analysis. At that point, I stopped listening to the program.

NBC did well.
