According to media reports, a Russian ship carrying several weapons, which was bound for Lagos, Nigeria has been detained by the South African authorities on August 23, 2018.

Declaring the discovery as a sensitive matter, the South African police have told Journalists that the ship was laden with weapons and explosives worth about $3.5 million in 20 containers.

The authorities were able to find the ship due to an anonymous tip-off to the Hawks Police Investigative Unit.

The vessel is said to have left Madagascar and was stopped near Port Elizabeth in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province.

However, the representatives of the Nigerian government, have not issued out any statement regarding the allegation and the wide media attention it is currently receiving.

One wonders if the weapons were scheduled to be used in perpetuating violence to favour certain elements who do not want a free and fair process in the 2019 General elections.

During the 2015 General elections, a lot of people expected the country to have a bloody election, in fact, many Nigerians told tales of their lives being threatened if the elections did not go a certain way.

However, the elections were relatively peaceful and the incumbent president was graceful enough to step down for the winner of the election. Will things go the same way again, if a new winner emerges?

The polity is currently overcharged as it is, with a country divided along religious and ethnic lines. Another question that comes to mind, is the possibility that the said Russian ship might still find its way into Nigeria at the end of the day after some backdoor political game has been played to secure the release of the ship.

But then again, is it possible that Nigerians are ready to fight for a better country, regardless of how much the sponsors of violence may desire a different outcome altogether?

What happened to the other imported weapons that were detected earlier? We only talked about them for two or three days and off we moved onto other trending issues.

This however appears to be a government thing because I doubt if any illegal arm importer will be so bold to load a ship and expect it to be cleared at the port without questions.

2 months later a cargo vessel FROM RUSSIA with a hidden cargo of weapons and explosives on its way to Nigeria (Lagos Port) gets impounded in South Africa as it stopped for routine checks.
