The acting Chairman of the Economic Financial Crimes Commission, Mr Ibrahim Magu, says some Senior Advocates of Nigeria have been frustrating the anti-corruption war by knowingly supplying the technical know-how and helping in the dispersal of the proceeds of crime.

Without mentioning any specific names, Magu said a particular senior advocate received N1.7bn in legal fees from a corrupt politician without a qualm.

He said the same senior advocate received N300m from a governor in the South-South as legal fees for an election petition case and failed to pay tax but quickly took advantage of the Voluntary Asset and Income Declaration Scheme when he realised he was under probe.

The EFCC boss said this in a piece titled, ‘Need for Ethical Reforms as NBA Conference Begins.’

The piece was written to coincide with the annual general conference of the Nigerian Bar Association, which begins in Abuja on Monday (today).

Magu said, “It is personally disheartening to see lawyers who invest their talents and expertise in advancing the cause of corrupt politicians and public officials. It is amazing that a senior lawyer can accept professional fees of N1.7bn from a politician without scruples!

“The same lawyer with a turnover of N3, 765,414,995.24 only paid valued added tax of N7, 051,928.24. The N300m cash payment which the senior lawyer received from a South-South state government in an election petition matter in 2016 was never captured in his tax submissions to the Federal Inland Revenue Service.

“Yet when he got wind of EFCC investigation, he was quick to take advantage of the VAIDS window as cover to shield himself from the commission’s dragnet.”

The EFCC boss said another senior advocate evaded taxes running into billions of naira but paid only a fraction of the amount.

“Another senior lawyer who is quick to advertise himself as the nemesis of the EFCC, has a turnover of over N5.1bn with an assessed total tax liability of over a billion naira between 2010 and 2017. Sadly, he merely declared a meagre N8m as gross earnings for 2014 and 2015, and N10m for 2016,” Magu said.

The EFCC boss said there was a need for lawyers to demand to know the sources of income of their clients before receiving any money.

He appealed to lawyers to put the interest of Nigeria ahead of any other monetary consideration.

Magu added, “While we are mindful of the fact that there may be more than one side to a situation which equally deserves of robust presentation and defence, we believe that no matter the positions we take on any issue, Nigeria should come first.”

Taofeek, To people like you everything is funny and for jests while the corrupt politicians steals your future.
For your information, Magu's children don't share the same problem with you; their father has secured their future. Can the same thing be said about you and your dad?
Stop typing rubbish.

the issue should be evading tax & not whether they collected millions or billions to defend clients.

after all, the magu himself is not clean according to the DSS report which indicted him. so he should stop pretending to be holier than thou...

Isn't the same Magu indicted for having properties his salary for life can't buy ?
EFCC was established for the opposition. Even OBJ that established it is corrupt. He wanted a 3rd tenure.

An agency established by a black man to fight
corruption, meanwhile, the agency could see our past leaders who shared Nigerian wealth among family and friends years ago including OBJ and PMB still walk free and even claiming saints.

According to reports millions disappeared under PMB as a petroleum minister, this allegation has looked like a fiction all because we aren't fighting corruption instead fighting opposition.

Nigeria will never be better as far as these set of looters are still alive.

Nigeria is too big with different ethnic groups to centralise power, meanwhile the saints including PMB knows this and he is doing nothing about it. He is shying away from restructuring which will bring true federalism. These cabals don't want to lose their grip on wealth at the center, they don't want to lose their absolute power thus making states toothless economically especially the oil producers,'Niger Delta'

If Arthur Eze, Orji Ako, Chris UBA etc and others could be so rich all these years what about the past military leader who settled them as obedient apprentices?

Magu is a big fool. Is it the SAN's fault that the efcc is filled with people that lacks the wherewithal to fight corruption. Don't blame the lawyer for not knowing how to do your job.

It's all a game.
So far they play by the law...
Unlike Buhari who has no regards for the law.
Donald Trump evade taxes amounts $50m and Obama couldn't do a thing...just because He played by the law.
Mr Magu...be professional enough to understand the law and stop witch hunting.

This is why fighting corruption in Nigeria is like pouring water inside a basket, the best case to have in Nigeria is corruption case, if I loot 20 billion Naira from the treasury, I will hire SAN legal luminaries to frustrate the case , rent presidential suite in Sheraton, get a fine girl from Brazil to massage me daily, drink my champagne and the case will fizzle out shocked

As a law student, I strongly believe collecting #1 trillion aint corruption but evading tax is... Imagine an extremely old man promising half of his property if u can win a case for him... And u did even tho the fact of the case shows that he z guilty... How is that lawyer guilty of any offence?? Its nt like there z any fixed price 4 soliciting a SAN's service
