Thirteen electricity Generation Companies (GenCos) were shut down while five others operated below capacity last Thursday after inadequate gas supply and low energy demand of Distribution Companies (DisCos) denied customers 4,023 megawatts (MW) of electricity.

Latest electricity industry data released by the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing shows that inability of the transmission line to carry 112MW of electricity from Gbarain NIPP in Bayelsa state accounted for a slight cause of the huge electricity loss recorded during the period.

The Daily Trust analysis of the report obtained yesterday indicates that while gas shortage affected the generation of 1,953MW across eight GenCos, another loss of 1,957MW across 10 GenCos was because the DisCos reduced their demand for electricity.

For the gas supply constraint, Adam VI in Rivers state was the worst hit as it shutdown, losing 640MW.

Geregu NIPP and Geregu Gas in Kogi state were shutdown due to gas cut and they lost 290MW each; another 230MW was lost at Odukpani NIPP after its two turbines lost gas supply.

Omotosho NIPP operated at half capacity to deliver 164MW, but it lost 195MW to gas cut; Sapele NIPP lost 112MW after it was shutdown, the exclusive report showed.

Alaoji NIPP and Olorunsogo Gas lost 120MW and 76MW as they were shutdown.

For the DisCos’ energy reduction, Shiroro hydro Genco in Niger state lost 390MW from its four turbines, it however delivered 210MW electricity which the DisCos could take.

Olorunsogo NIPP, Ihovbor NIPP and Delta lost 240MW, 225MW and 200MW after they were shutdown. Egbin in Lagos lost 207MW but generated 393MW; Azura in Edo lost 157MW and produced 150MW due to poor energy demand from the DisCos.

Delta and Jebba hydro Genco lost 200MW and 180MW as their four turbines shutdown; Omotosho Gas and Olorunsogo Gas could not generate 152MW and 76MW from six turbines which were down due to poor demand from the DisCos.

Okpai GenCo in Delta state generated only 20MW during the period and lost 130MW of electricity which was not demanded for by the 11 DisCos.

While losses continue at alarming rate, calculation of the expected peak demand of electricity for Nigerian consumers is at 17,000MW from which the grids produce only an average 4,000MW occasionally.

Buhari can't support and maintain existing power plant and pipelines but is building AKK pipelines and power plants to Kano.
More sad is the fact that he is building them through a NNPC that cannot run refineries very well.
That's cascaded or multilayered form of incompetence.

The nation has gone backwards since 2015. Power demands and investments grew but not power supply. No prepaid meter to even measure what is actually being used.

if the over $300m shared to the so called poor was invested in ensuring gas supply to these stations, I think there would have been a genuine improvement in steady power supply.

Just like some mo.ron supported GEJ with lies. It is becoming clearer to all that no old generation politician or military man can fix even 10% of Nigeria.

that's because this administration pays lip service to power supply.

it seems to want the sector to fail in order to justify the '16 years of waste' rhetoric.

but when it improves, they jump in to take glory.

look at dangote's refinery issue. ever since he said he can't deliver in 2019, this administration has gone quiet, nothing to deceive people with anymore.

99% of the things this administration has achieved has been by default rather than any clear purposive & coherent plan.

If the whole $300m was shared as claimed then it could have covered as many as N100,000 to 1 million persons or

N10,000 to 10 million persons.

but where are the beneficiaries? they couldn't even reach out to up to 100,000 persons in Osun state alone and that tell u the loot is largely being re-looted.

I don't know why we like to bring GEJ into d picture weneva d hypocrisy of dis govt is mentioned. Dis is a govt dat has continuously reminded Nigerians how bad d previous govt was. Dis is d same govt dat claims to have improved d power sector so much dat Nigerians no longer use generators and are even have more than dey can use. Most of d power plants currently in use were all built by d same GEJ. There are others at various levels of completion by d tym he left. He was no saint but he wasn't hypocritic and vindictive

This govt is not serious wallahi !

Poverty dem no fit fight

Corruption dem no fit win

Insecurity has also taken the center stage?

I'm patiently waiting for who would be blamed for this failure again.

Abeg, my country men if you get small money just port to solar and provide your own electricity.

Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different results.

The fact that some people expect an old man from the generation that wrecked Nigeria, to now take them to the promise land is nothing beyond stupid.
Buhari will leave in 2023 and power will still remain the same.
8 good years wasted that could have been utilized by a more dynamic leadership to effect proper reforms.

Oga ade, Obj and Gej invested billions into electricity with zero improvement. It was of no impact to the masses. The soft loan given to people will do a lot in ther small business if it is well utilized.
