Ode. The thing missed his wind pipe by whisker. He should be dead by now if not for the power that be. He is not alive because he was calm or too strong like the article try to suggest. He alive becoming that went through his neck without touching any major artery.

Wind pipe ( trachea) will have little or no role in causing death in this case. What is his biggest luck is that the nail missed his left carotid artery by one or two cm only and to some extent his jugular veins, he would have collapsed with torrential haemorrage and may not even make it to the hospital. Even greater danger would have been if the nail was towards his back when the spinal cord and base of the brain would have been in danger.
Despite all the luck at least a CT scan is required before removal operation by a very experienced surgical team.

I still think that the man has got grit, he is a very stoical and a person of calm disposition. Most other persons would make things worse through panic and hysteria.

The man must have a prior knowledge of how to survive with an injury. Stab wound, gunshot or whatever. The best thing to do is try to stay as calm as possible so as to keep your heartbeat rate as minimum as possible in turn minimizing blood loss which is the determining factor of whether you survive or die, pending when help could arrive.
