Ghana Shuts Down Over 370 Shops Owned By Nigerians In Kumasi, Arrests 100 Trade by evanso6226(f): 6:55am On Sep 08, 2018
In Kumasi the capital city of the Ashanti region in Ghana today ,over 350 shops owned by Nigerian traders was closed down and More than 100 Nigerian traders were reportedly arrested and detained by task force constituted by the Government of Ghana to regulate retail trade.

A Nigerian trader who spoke with CFR Magazine on telephone said the clamp down which began last month has frustrated a lot of Nigerian traders doing legitimate business in Ghana.

When the government began the clamp down in August, they claimed the affected shop owners failed to regularize their business concerns as prescribed by the local law, while those detained didn’t have the necessary documents such as passport, resident permit and work permit.

But, another Nigerian trader in Kumasi region who sent the photos and videos to CFR Magazine on Thursday said the exercise was originally termed a routine inspection of business premises owned by non-Ghanaians to determine whether they were up to date in the payment of taxes but has now culminated in another round of clamp down on shops owned by Nigerians.

“The exercise is targeted at Nigerian. We’re part of the ECOWAS. So why are they doing this? They’ve not entered into any shop owned by the Senegalese and the Togolese who do business here too.

“They said we’re taking over their jobs. Nigerian government needs to wade into this matter and save those in various detention facilities. Since yesterday, they’ve arrested over 100 Nigerians,” he said.

The Inter-Governmental Task Force comprises representatives from the National Security, Immigration, the Ministry for Interior, Ghana Standard Authority, Ministry for Trade and Industry, Ghana Police Service and Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA)

How does Ghana depend on Nigeria for survival apart from the petty services they render here?

I'm surprised by some of the comments here. Why are we so fond of going to other people's countries and disrespect their laws and when their officers descend on us , we call it jealousy and envy undecided or issue threats of retaliation?. Why can't Nigerians get into a country , do the necessary paperwork and live in peace with the host? Why do we always have to cause trouble and blackmail others ?. In Kenya they are calling for deportation of nigerian invaders who are causing a nuisance there . Here in South Africa, Nigerians are jumping from high buildings running away from immigration and officers . Why are we like this ?

The same Ghanaians that once flooded Nigeria in the 70's and 80's selling puff puff, bread, shoemakers and prostitutes before the ghana must go saga. I actually learnt to eat banku with geisha from them back in the days.

They are boldly taking this action because they are certain we lack any retaliatory powers that'll hurt or affect them immensely.

How are we descended so low as a joke in the comity of nations?

So help us, God.

Enjoy my siggy

I visit Ghana frequently.

This arrogance and delusional regard of your significance to the Ghana economy is the very reason why the task force overlooks the Togolese traders and focus on the braggart Nigerian that does not even have the necessary legal papers that ECOWAS membership prescribes.

I know for a fact that a law had been put in place in the past to even limit the ownership of retail stores by foreigners (mostly ECOWAS) in Ghana.

No country would sit by and watch its own citizens displaced economically by aliens and economic refugees.

Every country welcomes foreign investments that would provide jobs for the local population, hence Nigerian companies are welcomed to come do such in Ghana just as you have the SouthAfrican MTN, Shoprite and Multichoice doing same in Nigeria and elsewhere.
But at no time should such companies feel they are doing their host country and people a favour, when profit as a business goal is being made by such firms, example is MTN making its greatest profits in Nigeria.

So despite the limitations that ECOWAS membership still allows every sovereign state to apply, most countries tend to overlook such limits and tolerate some prohibitions in the spirit of African brotherhood, but remember that the rules still exist to be exploited if the situation becomes dire.

Also remember that Nigeria was the one that deported about a million Ghanaians from Nigeria during the Shagari government for the economic benefit of Nigeria.

Ghana too will do what is of benefit to its economy and people, and preponderance of foreign retail shop ownership does not benefit any host country or its people.

Nigerian Supremacists like you who do not know your place in a sovereign foreign country, is one of many reasons why some specific illegal foreign residents find it tough with local authorities who overlook the transgressions of the "humble Togolese"

Even Liberia that you helped liberate from warfare, has validly arrested a Nigerian bank MD for assaulting a citizen of Liberia.

Go and tell them that you own Africa, so that all can marvel at Nigeria's greatness.

what will you sanction?
if you joke, we will send all the 4 Nigerian banks in Ghana packing.
Mind you, we already have too many banks for 29million people and the regulator is seeking ways to fold more banks up.
Then we will sanction NNPC, they will immediately lose a billion dollars from Ghana.

what will you sanction of Ghana? we don't put investment into Nigeria, its a risky adventure

If you start a trade war with Nigeria, it's ordinary Ghanaians that will suffer and probably a few elites from the Nigerian business community. Still, the Nigerian elites can always take their money elsewhere in Africa.

Insecurity, multiple taxation, dollar rate instability and more is our lot in our own very Country.

Naija is not business friendly and job ain't available for it's citizen and the government is not helping matters.

Why won't embarassment follow Nigerians about, even to the countries we tend to find succour from; hmm and our closest own at that. angry

NAIJA NEEDS TO BECOME A BETTER PLACE FOR IT'S CITIZEN BUT I DON'T KNOW HOW undecided

Bro, the Togolese business people are seen as humble or inconsequential by the Ghanian government because they come from a country with a much smaller population and economy than Ghana.

The Ghanaian government does not see them as a major competition in the west African region as it sees Nigeria.

No one can deny that there's definitely the fear amongst most west African citizens that once given the room to maneuver, Nigeria with its huge population and financial prowess will probably take over economic activities from the locals of other west African countries.

Ghana will not suffer one bit
we will replace Nigeria with Equatorial Guinea when it comes to gas
straight away, Nigeria will lose it biggest gas market in Africa
Nigerian banks will lose a profitable Banking market in Africa and your elites will be pissed at your politicians
the ordinary Ghanaian wouldn't even blink an eye because they do very little with Nigeria

in the short run, Ghanaian private schools will face a decline in enrollment but the new trend is from Gabon and Ivory Coast
lot of them are filling Ghanaian schools

So the replacement for the gas supply will simply be done overnight, right? grin

You must think it is that easy to start embarking on new multimillion dollars worth of project.

Anyways, Do you know what the Russia federation does to most western European countries that it supply gas? Particularly Germany?

lest I forgot, America was once our number one customer when it came to buying of our crude oil, but ever since it stop buying our crude oil due to the shale oil revolution in its territory, did it stop Nigeria from existing?

@ banks

oh come off it already, what profit are the Nigerian banks really making in Ghana that they can't make elsewhere in Africa, I believe it's their Ghanaian staffs that will lose their jobs

@ school enrollments

I thought you were trying to argue with logic earlier by pointing to the possible losses the Nigerian Petroleum and banking industry will suffer should we start a trade war with your country, but to think that for Some reasons best known to you, your schools will simply fill up the void left behind by Nigerians by other African countries shows a major deficiency in your logical thinking capacity, because you should have known that we can simply fill the void left behind by your country with other African countries as well.

Notwithstanding, I fail to see the purpose of your counter statements because you just agreed with my earlier comments in which I stated that the Nigerian business elites like bank owners and co will suffer, while their Ghanaian workers will feel the pain just as much, if not more.
