The latest full score from Sci Val 2017 shows the University of Ibadan leads with 900 scholar output from 114 departments

While Obafemi Awolowo University Sci Val 2017 result shows the university trailing in an 'uncomfortable' lead with 550 research publications emanating from about 88 departments in the university.

Covenant University comes third and is the only private institution in top 10 with the Sci Val 2017 indicating 500 research publications emanating from 32 departments.



In global comparism Harvard university has 15,000 research publications in any given year and is the same size as UI and OAU. University of Capetown(same size with UI and OAU) also has 3,000 research publications.

Caltech a small sized university in the US has 3,000 research publications.

Nigerian universities are admonished to improve the quantity and quality of research to advance on world university rankings.

UI is such a great school!

UI = 950/114 dept = 8 publications/dept

OAU = 550/88 = 6 pub/dept


CU = 500/32 = 15 publications/dept - we the boss

Let government have 20% stake.


While FG should concentrate more on technical schools and craft centers

Fair enough but we need more publications that would affect lives positively.

Higher degrees are attached to numbers of manuscripts you can produce in a sane university that is serious with her researches. e.g. minimum of 3 publications for MSc and 4-5 for PhD. That's is how SouthAfrican universites can have thousands of article in a year.
In Nigeria, our researchers doesn't even have research area of interest, not to talk of mentoring their students to publish. Students are just after the degree.

It's not about the volume. It's about the impact. Comparing the volume of research at Harvard to Covenant or UI is laughable.

Trust me those top universities do some crazy research that can change the course of things.

The impact of the research done in Nigerian universities is very weak. How many of our professors in Nigeria publish in top journals?
