MAUTECH VC says Nigerian Universities sell bread and bottle water to survive

The Vice-Chancellor of Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola, Adamawa State, Prof. Mohammed Kyari has described Nigerian Universities as business outlets.

The VC during an interview with Punch Nigerian universities are now selling bottled water and opening bakery to keep themselves running.

Kyari while responding to a question on whether Nigerian universities have been creative enough to survive the difficult environment stifled by poor funding said the universities cannot be creative when they don’t have the resources.

''How creative can they be and what else can they do? Nigerian Universities literally have become business outlets. Universities are selling table water, running bakeries and commercial bus services or guest house services. This is no way to run a university. It can never fund universities. The bottom line is that as long as universities are not sufficiently funded to do basic teaching and research, they cannot function.

''Creativity will be constrained because you cannot be creative when you don’t have the resources. Sometimes we switch off electricity because we can’t pay for electricity. There would be public electricity supply, but we’ll have to switch off simply because we cannot afford the cost. We require about N20m per month to maintain the university on the public power supply. But, whatever government gives me may be sufficient for only three months of the year, not for 12 months. So you have to be creative. But creativity is in how to run the university with limited resources'', he said.

Nigerian students are not receiving quality education- VC
Another Vice-Chancellor also took a swipe at the Nigerian University system and its effects on the Nigerian students education.

The Vice-Chancellor of Crescent University, Abeokuta, Prof Ibraheem Gbajabiamila recently admitted that Nigerian students are not receiving quality education.

The VC says this while speaking at the 70th anniversary of Anwar-ul-Islam College Agege on Thursday, September 6, 2018.

Speaking on the topic: ''Quality education and national development”, Gbajabiamila said Nigeria used to be a Mecca of sorts for other African countries seeking quality education, adding that the county had lost its glory to countries like Ghana, Tanzania and Gambia.

This is why the graduates are unemployable.. when the schools have to research grants , they have to source for funding through these means to even keep the lights on

How do you then think quality of education the institutions give the students will be their priority?

Nigeria is a dead country

There is nothing special here to me. Universities are suppose to impart knowledge and character on graduates. If the universities can't then bring these examples they set in terms of business knowledge and character to run ventures that will keep them afloat, what are they giving certificates for?
Foreign schools are into business ventures and since we compare ourselves to foreigners at every slight chance it will be fair we do what they do to survive.

To me the most pressing need of the system is blocking of leakages. Even if the business deliver trillions in profit, leakages can still bring the system down.

This is why graduates are even as employable as they are. In foreign schools they run business to support themselves because they know student fees can't fund researches and government can't be equally burdened with research funding. Let the VC go and sit down.
Even here in Nigeria, Landmark University has business interests and proceeds of these businesses fund the school partly.

You are very right, plus many universities even in the West are now being plagued by insufficient funding... Examples are ystralian unis whose funding is being pulled. I heard that of Irish too is being cut. Though ours in Africa is more severe. Therefore universities everywhere must find innovative ways to generate huge funding for themselves.

Landmark is doing it and so why shouldn't taxpayers funded schools do it?
Until we learn to fuse character or moral with learning we are just deceiving ourselves. Universities should be a working sample of any society they intends to impact with minds they mold. Ours tally with our society and I am not surprised.

We like to trivialize our entrepreneural strides too much in this country. Having bakeries, factories, fish farms and poultry farms etc, does not only help to generate revenue for the schools but also serve as a way to practicalize the theoretical knowledge being given to some of these students and as a research ground. It's the same reason while medical schools have hospitals.

Theres nothing wrong in a university producing thgs to offset some cost. it all depends on hw u look at it. if u hv it in mind that govt must provide 100% funding, u in for trouble. produce water that is considered cleanest in d world, get world fame and build factory for it. nothing wrong in it.
