Enugu Govt. awards fresh contracts of over N1.4bn for devt. projects by Babygiwa(f): 5:15pm On Nov 12, 2018
The administration of Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has awarded contracts for another set of development projects that are critical to its urban renewal strategy, totaling over N1.4 billion.

Briefing newsmen on the outcome of the meeting of the State Executive Council (EXCO), the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Greg Nnaji, explained that the bulk of the contracts awarded were for the construction of 10 units of Executive Guest House at the old Governor’s Lodge, G.R.A, Enugu, for routine guests of the state government.

Engr. Nnaji, who stated that the council was concerned that Enugu State Government has never had a guest house for its visitors in spite of its status as the historic capital of Eastern Region, old Anambra State, old Enugu State and the capital of present Enugu State, described the 10-unit guest house as “a legacy project”.

The commissioner disclosed that the council gave the approval to save money for the government in line with its adherence to prudent management of resources, adding that it “will put to rest the speculations on what the state government intended to do with that property”, which served as the headquarters of the Post Primary Schools Management Board (PPSMB) before it was relocated to Independence Layout, Enugu.

He further explained that the state-of-the-art housing project which was captured in 2018 budget are duplexes, “made up of four bedrooms on the first floor, all ensuite and the ground floor that occupies the main doors, the dinning, the kitchen and one other room”, stressing that they are “considered as one of the best modern day guest houses in our present times”

Engr. Nnaji said that his ministry had carried out clearing work at the site preparatory to the immediate commencement of construction, “so that the good people of Enugu State will continue to have belief in God and the capability of His Excellency, the governor to deliver the dividends of democracy”.

Also approved by the EXCO, according to the works commissioner, were execution of some road projects in the state, at the cost of over N945 million “to ease transportation and mobility of our people”.

Engr. Nnaji, who pointed out that “the roads are so important to our people”, listed them to include Ebonyi Paint Road, Awkunanaw, Enugu South LGA; Owerre Ezukala Close, Independence Layout, Enugu, Enugu North LGA; rural roads in the state - Abor Road and St. Mary Ngwo, Nsude Road under RAMP II; and the access road and internal roads in the Police Mobile Force Squadron 3, Gariki, Awkunanaw, Enugu South LGA, which he noted was “the first time any government is intervening on the roads for our dear officers and men of the Nigerian Police Force”.

In his brief, the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Ogbuagu Anikwe told newsmen that the council approved an Executive Bill initiated by the state government to give a legal backing for School of Nursing, Midwifery and Lab Technicians, Bishop Shanahan Hospital, Nsukka, to enable it get fully accredited as required by the law.

Mr. Anikwe noted that the bill to be forwarded to the Enugu State House of Assembly will be a universal bill to accommodate any other similar institution that will be seeking accreditation as trainers of nurses, midwives and lab technicians.

Wastage....

What about using that strategic site to build a tourist centre/park, mall, etc that will yield revenues to the government? Why add to the recurrent expenditures of the state? How will we explain to the next generation that we used that such a beautiful site within the centre of the city for "guest houses" ?

About 9yrs ago Peter Obi as the governor of Anambra state refused to build a presidential lodge in Awka despite appeals by the then President Obasanjo insisting that Awka has hotels that is good enough for the president each time he visits.

Guests to government houses should be able to take care of their stay. The accommodation bills are included in the travel allowances and estacodes of these "guests". This will reduce the cost on the lean resources of the government.

Enugu expectedly should be the hub of the east and as such private businesses should be encouraged to thrive. Visitors to Enugu should patronize the hotels, eateries, joints etc and are not to be caged in one govt guest house with an over inflated bills on the government.

Enugu cannot afford this wastefulness of government.

The citizens of the state should let us know if they can see the projects that amount is being paid for.

An outsider can't really say much on this.
If the governor is doing a good job.
Thumbs up to him.
That is what good governance should be all about.

Good job fire. Is that not the same Enugu govt that painted one fine road like Bristish road that we were all admiring only for rain to sweep the road of three days later. I am sure the budget for the painting of that road is more than what is stated here Na today all Igbo Governors under PDP be failures ?!

The roads there is nothing to write home about. Pat Asadu came there day before yesterday and I was expecting him to say something meaningful but do you know what the old man later did? He gave the youth one million naira. I was like this man is taking us for a ride. We don't need the money, we are not so poor. You can't come and bribe us with chicken change. We need economic projects in Iheakpu-awka. Despite all our appeal for the reconstruction of our secondary school
and roads in Iheakpu-awka the man didnt mention. I have decided to join APC, if that man called pat Asadu that has stayed in the house of Rep for 20 years
with nothing to show for it continue to intimidate the opposition party with thugs then we will have it our way

Nobody should be deceived by all this paid advert on nairaland by Enugu state government.
The main problem is that we don't have opposition party in the state to open their can of worms and those who claim they are in opposition are still working for PDP.

I weep for that state, the governor is so weak,

I want to ask, what is the Governor doing about the Ikem - Eha-Amufu Road which is the worst road in Nigeria?
The good people of that axis seem to have been forgotten. Eha-Amufu that used to feed most of South East states with garri, yam and other farm produce is now a ghost town due to impassable road. I ask again, Mr. Ugwuanyi, what does it take to fix the Eha-Amufu Road? Or, has the solution transmogrified into the realm of nuclear science?
Take note, nothing you do in Enugu will be complete without fixing this very important Road!

What do you think can be done? Enugu state politics is like a cult. You hardly hear them talking about the government's incompetence.
And those we expect to take the lead like the former governor of Enugu state are sleeping after feeding
him with embezzled money. All this youth empowerment and awarding of contracts are money for election

They have resulted to buying of awards and praises from various organizations with state money. The way this man sharing money, you would think that Enugu is richer than Lagos.

It will be an understatement to liken the type of politics played here to cultism.

They are like terrorist ever ready to kill to have their way.
They are busy dishing out threats to the opposition having seen that their chance of winning via rigging is becoming slim on daily basis.
