The International Aviation College in Ilorin (Kwara State) is scheduled to commence operations on October 1, 2010. The International Aviation College is a project of the Kwara State Government under the administration of Dr. Bukola Saraki. On assumption of office, Dr. Bukola Saraki quickly realized that the Ilorin International Airport was a strategic economic asset. Consequently, he embarked on a number of projects to take full advantage of the social and economic opportunities presented by the airport. One of such projects is the International College of Aviation. The college is intended to train pilots and aviation support staff for the aviation industry. The college is not only expected to plug the human resource gaps in the local aviation industry, it is also expected to train world class personnel, with a focus on safety efficiency and responsibility.

Dr. Bukola Saraki has several times stressed that the International College of Aviation is intended to complement the National Center for Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria. NCAT went into a serious decline during the 90’s. The school was no longer producing any professionals and the industry had to depend on foreign professionals, some from neighbouring countries and beyond. Thankfully, it has been revived and is beginning to graduate professionals again. However but it cannot cope with the needs of the industry due to the tremendous growth in air travel domestically and internationally. It is worth noting that South Africa has 40 training schools, while Nigeria has only 2.

The International Aviation College will be officially commissioned on October 1. Already, work is at an advanced stage on much of the physical infrastructure of the college such as classrooms and accommodation. 4 Diamond ITC aircraft meant for training pilots have also been purchased.
